MoveLater2 Cleaning fuel tank for water storage?

Somewhere in this house is a book of 1001 ways of tips to clean, which included how to get petrol/diesel fumes out of a tank (alloy in this case), so I can then use it for water storage. Anyone have any brilliant ideas - citrus based products rings a faint bell?

I used Napisan - if it can clean nappies it can clean anything. Took several fills (left to slosh around for a week at a time) and flushes but eventually got all the diesel taste out of a stainless tank.

I'm pretty sure I saw an Australian Grand Design type programme where the geezer did just that - used an old fuel bowser to hold water - but I cant remember what he used to clean it. If anything comes to me I'll let you know.
    cheers,

I don't like the idea at all but if forced I think I might try a heap of the denture cleaning tablets a few dozen times after a few kilos of Bi Carb and water (Big bulk lots from Cost-co)

bicarb is very absorbent to smells. Mix with hot water then leave over night. repeat a few times then the hit with polident or similar. Might work

Anything mildly acid or alkaline on an alloy tank should clean well.Dont leave anything that will eat into the alloy in too long.
If you are a homebrewer, you should have some very good cleaning stuff. The Neo Pink is very good.

We bought an old 425L diesel tank for our truck, which we wanted to use for water storage.

We used Borax to get rid of the diesel taint.

Apparently it is an old sailor trick, for when some twit puts diesel in the water tanks on a yacht.

Couple of treatments, and the tank is a sweet as! Zero whiff of diesel at all.

Just to add - we got a container of Borax from Woolies or Coles (can't remember) and it was reasonably cheap.

You really need heat to leach out any toxic crap embedded in the metal.
Steam is the easiest, make a fire and set up a 20l drum, sealed with a lid, 1/2 fill with water, run a pipe, heat proof hose out of top of 20l container into your fuel tank and let steam away for hours.
This is how ex-service station underground tanks are cleaned for water carting, the heat opens the pores and kills any bugs, Regards frank.
