Cracked Chassis - front left at base of shock tower

I just had my ACE return hose spring a leak, and noticed that the hose had worn through on the LH Terrafirma shock tower. All very good except the tower is leaning in at a 10-15 degree slant from vertical, where it should be. Closer inspection showed considerable cracking on the chassis at the bottom of the tower. Looks like a front end strip, straighten and weld is needed. I am weighing up my options. Don’t have the capacity to do it at home. Photos to follow. Looking for advice - do I weld or find a donor car?

I would get it corrected first.

Unusual for that to happen..i had the front D2 panhard bracket fail after a pounding cross the simmo. ..we cleaned it up and welded it.

Find a good welder and weld it...no worries.

Hmm, I can't remember my password to get into my site...

It's in a file I lost when I had my HDD failures a few weeks back.
    Found 'em!

Thats interesting! That part is very different to what I had put in. I'm not sure what my story is in that case.

Slunnie, did you do it to mitigate or to repair it?
Been wondering for a while if its worth doing as pre-emptive measure?

Mine was done pretty early on and I'm pretty sure it was done as a repair. I cant recall if the dealer did it or if Bruce Davis did it though.

    Cracked chassis repaired

I ended up finding a well reviewed welder in Mitchell ACT, who did a first class job in straightening and then repairing the cracked shock mount and strengthening the right hand side too. Front end is ‘solid as’ now. Thanks to M&A Engineering, Mitchell.

    Howdy

I am grappling with the pesky crack next to the steering box on the driver side, I was wondering if anyone had one of the plates mentioned on this thread fitted to their D2 and if so if they could share photos of how it sits? I can't track one down so may look at having one made by a boilermaker friend.

Also if anyone has had a go at welding the crack themselves, did you have to take out the steering box or could I get away with removing the radiator and hoses only? The crack on mine hasn't spread to the top yet but goes all the way up on the passenger side...
