300Tdi waste gate problem - which way is closed ?

Just checked my boost pressure with a new wanky 'swoosh' guage. After connecting up the plumbing to the same point as the waste gate actuator I proceeded for a test drive and watched the gauge rapidly go past 15psi and then off the scale past 20psi ! Probably reaching something like 25psi !

Seems my waste gate is not openning.

When the engine is not running, the waste gate lever is towards to the radiator (ie front of the car). Is this the closed or open position ?

Also, any tips on removing the actuator ? Must the whole exhaust manifold come off in order to reach it ?

Thanks in adv.

Hi Taz
25 PSI boost!!!!! You must have a rocketship.
Hopefully the gauge is defective, you need to borrow a gauge thats working correctly to check the reading.
25psi isnt too healthy in stocky diesel.
How friendly is your usual mechanic??? See if he has a hand gauge to plug into your gauge.I have a boost gauge in the Trytoo you are welcome to try,but Im 160ks away. You could come and pick Tinys motor up
Good luck

Turned out to be a whole in the actuator. Not in the diapham but in the actual metal can itself ! and it was about 2mm x 4mm. Bugger if I know how that happened !
I tried arc welding it up, but I failed miserably and now the actuator is definetly history. Around $450 from LR so I'm gunna see if turboteck can match it up with a non OEM part.
I imagine the leak also meant that my low rpm boost was degraded, probably not by much thou.
And thanks for the offer to pick up Tiny's engine, but I did that once already - about 800km round trip to Dongara to get his series 2a!
Cheers,
Taz.
