A customer says his new Vacuum pump is operating whilst his TDi is idling!

Just the other week I had a customer saying a 300TDi vacuum pump we sent him was faulty so we sent him a replacement in the mail as a goodwill without 1st receiving the alleged faulty one back for our inspection, to keep him on the road.

now he emails me and says the new replacement is running whilst his TDi is idling! he can feel a slight vacuum with his finger when it's at idle and he's worried that it'll wear out from over usage!.
He reckons he wasn't a mechanic, but a vacuum pump fitment is well within his scope of capabilities.
I've never heard of a 300TDi Vacuum pump that disengages when idling, they are a mechanical pump. I emailed him that's normal, and it's the same as a fuel lift pump, the plunger operates at idle too.

Then the other day I get numerous email about prices for new rear window regulators for a disco 1, customer unhappy that his existing rear windows only go half way down.
I email him that it is normal and working correctly , as the door shape doesn't allow the window to go down all the way into the door body. No, he still wants a price and asked if we sold modded front window regulators?

    oh the joys

    Re Vacuum Pump

No wonder people don't trust part dealers

Apologize and tell him you will send a proper one on receipt of the one which will wear out quickly.

Then (on receipt) send him something that doesn't go over 1" until at least 3000 rpm

If he complains " just helping to build the withered muscule in yourleg"

Re "No, he still wants a price and asked if we sold modded front window regulators?"

Maybe able to help here as we play around with 3D printing, The proper fix is getting rid of the cost saving factory cut down of the rear door height below the glass. For a mere $2000 (trade) we can supply a mod to ensure the glass will go down only to the top of the raised door

But what about the hole left in the window after it is cut around the door body, it'll let rain and dust in.

Genuine 300TDi rear Crank seals are made in India, in genuine land rover packaging, and more and more parts are being made in india, brake pads, rotors are being made in China and finished off here in Australia, the Japs are getting their electronics, tvs and stuff although branded in Japan there are made in China. Aussie made stuff is assembled here from foreign components. You just have no control as labour in countries is too expensive so all these big companies are getting stuff made in developing countries.
Genuine Land Rover hoses are made in malaysia ( Asia), had a complaint from a customer that they don't like stuff made there.
Now since Indian Tata owns jag and Land Rover, I wonder if the anal customers are still going to buy a new land rover?
    you cant win.

Customers will find that most things made from rubber are from Asia, especially Malaysia - one of the main sources for rubber.

Yes Tom I know that and you know that as most of the rubber plantations are in those tropical places so factories are placed near the source of the raw materials, make economic sense. I had a customer complain that buying from various regions could be indirectly support the Taliban

    Chris,
I can see the customers point of view though. They are so used to being ripped off, they become distrustful of everyone and are quick to cry foul.

Often it might be genuine naivety of mechanical workings. It's just part of the parcel these days.
I personally had one of those stupidity questions at Masters the other day, Heather & I purchased a new light for the dining room. I asked the woman at the check out " Does this come with light globes?".
"Dunno", she replied "I 'll check for you"
She called a floor person and the guy informed us " no need for globes , it's an LED unit"

I felt silly, but, being so used to buying globed lights for the house in the past, I didn't think these new fandangled lights these days are LED. I gotta get out more
