300tdi tappet noise or not ?
Hi guys , been away for a while my first post for a year or so but enough about that, here is my question.
I get a ticking sound from the engine around 2000 - 2200rpm which sounds like the engine needs a tappet adjustment (like 1 tappet is loose)
I have had the tappets adjusted at MR Auto but the noise remains, the guys at Mr said some 300tdi's have it and some dont and they are not sure where its is coming from and at $80odd an hour I can afford to let them search for it.
So here I am asking you guys, any ideas ??
engines done 146000kms and the vac pump is ok

if the tappets were noisy....wouldnt they do it right through the rev range...?

Its not the tappets but I have had mainly chevy v8s til now nad there taps are noisy all the time but they sort of peak ( get loudest )at a particular rev, So I am not sure if they would stay noisy at all rpms, but as I said I have had the tappets adjusted , so its not that
Thanks though

none that youd like to hear...all the rest are expensive.....
have you checked the pump timing...?
can you pin point the sound to a partiticular part of the engine....
ie....top front bottom or back...?

pump timing is fine, hard to pin point the sound, if anything from infront of the driver. Hense I thought vac pump but MR said not

it may even be just a rattle from anything....bonnet rod, lost tools from last mechanic....etc.
