Bio-diesel in your Landy. Anyone tried or tempted?

Bio diesel is readily available in Adelaide at the pump from SAFF (South Australian Farmers Fuel) outlets. They have 100% bio, a bio-diesel mix and normal diesel. Bio diesel doesn't contain ethanol. Bio is better for your engine than normal diesel. The only drawback is you have to change your fuel filter after the first couple of tanks as it cleans out your tank. After that, a nice crean fuel system for ever. I ran all three types in my TD5 to check milage etc. This is 80% city driving, roof rack and all the added extras. B100 (100% bio) 13.1 Ltr/100 Klm. B20 (mix) 13.1 again and straight diesel 12.4 As the advantages are there; less polution, clean fuel system, sustainable etc . I run 100% bio. You can add or mix normal diesel any time so where it isn't available just top up with normal diesel.
The engine is quieter too as the bio is a better lubricant. Several other Landrover guys I know run bio as well and have been using it for well over 12 months now with no problems.

Bio is currently at $1.20 10 cents cheaper than my local Shell.

When I had my TD5 Discovery serviced by a Land Rover specialist (not a dealer) I was told NOT to run on biodiesel. I figured they know more about the TD5 than I do so I have, and will, heed their advice. I didn't ask why but figured it was best not to run on it rather than possibly fork out big $$$ for a rebuild.

I'm sure this has been mentioned, but in the fender manual it explicitly states that you should not use bio in your LR. Therefore, if youi had problems your warranty could be shot [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]

Its not the warranty I'm worried about..its the engine and every other thing that invoves Bio [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

I too have been tempted to use Biodiesel on occasion but have these points to consider:

-The cost of injectors. SHould something happen these arent cheap

-Compatability. Biodiesel can cause swelling of rubbers other than Viton.
I havent had the time to get the fuel lines etc, compatability checked and dont think its worth the hassle or future bill should something go wrong.

And whilst SAFF etc sell it, diesel here in Whyalla was down to $1.14 today so I dont really care!!! ;-)

Hi Guys,
We did our first Sydney Biodiesel Users Group biodiesel pick up at the end of October and everything went smoothly.

In case any of you are from Sydney and are interested we are currently arranging our second pick up and we are generally encouraging people to buy it by the 200 litre drum unless you can partner up with a 'biodiesel buddy' and split the drum between yourselves.

The pick up looks like being once again from Rozelle and possibly on 2nd December. This fuel is completely legal and tax paid - no problems. It is exactly the same fuel that they are currently running in some of the Sydney Ferries.

We are also exploring the option of organising some of our group members to go up to Rutherford (Newcastle) to pick up a load from up there as we can get it cheaper there.

Word has it that it will be available from a servo in the inner west soon.

Some of our group members (like me) are also members of the Landrover Owners Club and I believe that someone is already trying to organise a presentation to be given to the club at a club meeting. We are also looking for other 4WD Clubs that would like a presentation about it all to be made to them at one of their meetings.

One word of caution from one of our members who has a Freelander ... you have all heard by now that biodiesel cleans out the accumulated dinodiesel gunk out of your fuel system. He reports today that it seems that the fuel filter in his Freelander is actually AFTER the fuel pump and so he now has to strip down his pump to get the dino diesel crap out. This sounds too crazy to be true to me but there you go. Landrover engineering at its best! Can anyone confirm or refute this bit of engineering folly?

May I ask whats the cost of a 200lt drum ?

I could be interested, and that long drive from Leichhardt to Balmain shouldn't be too hard. How much by the drum?

Oh, and did you change your fuel lines over?
