There seems to be a few different chips around, how much
do they differ from each other, preformance etc???
The prices all seem to be round the $1000 mark
Anyone had trouble after having a chip fitted???

I too was looking at all the options of having my TD5 chipped. In Australia everyone seems to go with Bruce Davis, but when I tried to find out the nitty gritty of what they do no one could really give me the details I wanted. After a lot of shopping around I got onto Michael Samootin of Range-Rov in Nunawading. They are dealing directly with Bell automotive in UK who are experts on re chipping or re flashing the TD5. The option they provided me for my 2002 TD5 Discovery was to re flash the existing ECU via the OBD2 diagnostic terminal.
I have now had this done for about 6 weeks and to say I am impressed is an understatement.
The car is transformed, power is great and the economy about the same and definetly better when towing.
Price, well you will have to discuss that with Michael but it should be around the $700-800 mark.
The BD chip is a replacement ECU with the upgraded chip if you have a non-flash unit, and a flash upgrade if its a later ECU. They alter the fueling and timing maps from what I understand, though I'm not the guru.
Disco TD5
Std 100Kw, 315Nm
ECU 147kw, 450Nm
ECU/Intercooler 170kw/520Nm.
ECU is roughly $850, Intercooler is about $1500.
The B Davis as slunnie has said is a replacement ECU that has come off a TD5, what Bruce does is remap the ECU using a very sufisticated german computer program he has aquired.
While out their getting my ECU upgraded he gave me a demo of how it is done, he was working on a V8 at the time so all you DII V8 guys look out as he will have it going pretty soon, amazing stuff to see how he does it.

OK I'm starting to be convinced that going up hills in any gear other than first could be fun...

Had mine done. Pulled the ECU out of the Defender and posted it to Bruce. Had it back in just under a week (express post takes two days to and from here and there was a weekend in the middle).
Have to say that once the turbo cuts in the acceleration is dramatic - the revs climb so quickly that you have to change gear pretty well straight away. Before the turbo cuts in the performance is much the same.
Thing I notice the most is that I use higher gears than before and as an example a local hill that I would previously enter in second gear (it comes off a turn at a set of lights) and have to stay in second until the apex is now climbed in second, third and just changing to fourth before the apex. Also, it used to take me a long windup to get to 100kph or higher and now I reach that easily.
So, is it worth it? Yes. Do I beat WRXs off the lights? No - and i have no desire to do so...
I for one have thought long and hard about this option, but being a bit of a nervous nellie :oops: I wonder about the longevity aspects.
