I was driving one of my kids to his mates place yesterday arvo, in stop start traffic, when I heard a bang and lost drive in the front axle - front prop shaft spinning but no go, got home by locking the centre diff.
I pulled the passenger side CV and half shaft out OK ( look to be in great nick ) but the driver side shaft is stuck in the diff. After some gentle persuasion with a hammer, all I managed to do was separate the CV from the shaft - I wish they were always that easy .
I plan to weld an axle puller to the end of the half shaft when I get time, and bash it out that way, but was just wondering if there is an easier way.
Also, I can’t understand why the shaft spins freely at the diff unless you pull on it, then it seems to bind with the carrier - maybe I should drop the oil and see if there are any bits of diff gears floating around.
Any advice/sympathy appreciated .

PS – where can I get good but cheap half shafts?

I would guess that the diff centre has failed, and in doing so has burred the end of the shaft. The most likely failure is either a broken planet shaft or a broken planet, but there is likely to be a lot of other damage caused by rotating it with the broken bits in the works. (Mine has had a four planet centre for over ten years)

Fudge  has any one got a spare diff laying around 8) maybe it's time for that locker I've always wanted.

Update – the halfshaft had broken at the diff end, and the splines had flared making it hard to pull out of the side gear. It took me about 3 hours to make a puller ( welding didn’t work ) and its out. I removed the diff to get the broken bit and all looks good so all I need now is a new half shaft and I can hit the beach again
