I'm back! 4000km 20 day work trip...
I know you all missed me. Now to the bit you want to know - this is what went wrong:
1) Prince of Darkness has seen fit to intermittently cripple rear passenger side window. Have to strip door lining off to investigate.
2) Both front hub bearings have loosened a little to the point that the car can be rocked by the wheels and a "clunk" is heard in the hub. I investigated a whining brake disk at 110kph near Newcastle and found that the bearing end play had increased. Continued on, and will investigate asap.
3) Suspect batch of petrol. Runs fine on LPG, but feels breathless over 2000 rpm, idles badly and pops on over run with ULP. Ran tha last of it out today and will fill again over the weekend. The car did backfire out the intake once (my fault) prior to problem.
4) 6.00pm last night motoring out of Irymple, 3rd/4th gate was not as smooth as before. Shay had found it hard to get into fourth earlier that day but she has so much trouble with the gearbox I thought nothing of it. Not as smooth became not centred properly and within 20 mins of driving the gearstick centred on the 1st/2nd gate with no bias detected towards 3rd/4th. I suspect the bias spring has broken, and will have to investigate over the weekend. It was still drivable but I had to drive all the way home to save arguments with Shay...
That's Rovering for you I guess!

Anyone with anything to add on the afore mentioned problems feel free to speak up! All solvable - the issue of poor ULP running is the one that could be most riddled with gremlins I think but I won't get too far ahead of myself...

Sounds typical of a dual fuel though. Runs like a nice dream on one and nightmare on the other.
Backfiring could be ignition timing, misfires out the carby could be valves or iginition timing. A timing light check would be my first suggestion, then check for blockages in both air and fuel metering.

Hmmm. Sorted the problem with the bias springs. There is a pressed and folded stop plate which cracked and allowed the right hand spring to exert influence on the shaft beyond the 3rd/4th gate. I got at it by removing the console, and the top casing of the tranny with it still in place in the car. Got out the super fine welding rods and did a fine job of repairing it. It seems to be locating fine but I need to take it for a drive in the morning without 2 glasses of shiraz in the system. I am tempted to leave it uncovered and since the access is good I might throw a couple of new springs in there too.
On the timing front, I have not checked it but since it runs nicely on LPG I don't think anything has changed. The backfire out the intake (EFI model so no carby) was my fault. I was driving just out of Bathurst and the mobile went. I pulled over to plug it in to the charger, and turned the motor off to talk. Problem is the cigarette lighter plug has no power while the ignition is off. Mistakenly thinking the crank had stopped (3 or so seconds later!) I flicked the ignition back on and POP! It coughed hard enough to partially dislodge the intake snorkel from the manifold between the manifold and the LPG mixer. As far as I can work out the MAF has no part in managing the motor when on LPG since the mixer is a static unmanaged device. I dunno how sensitive the MAF sensors are to backfiring, but it may have cracked it a little due to the backfire. Suspecting that it might not have been good for for the MAF sensor I ran the car on petrol just to make sure I could still depend on the tank full of petrol for useful range and it was fine at that time. Normally it runs superbly on LPG and very well on petrol, but the petrol is nowhere as smooth as it was before the trip.
Anyhow, the gearshift issue is the one that most alarmed me and I can say I have pretty much sorted that one. Photos to come!

Even if you left the ignition on, the lpg controller will shut the solenoids off after a few seconds plus gas will only flow from the converter under vacumn.
My lpg (carby ) is popping when i back off and runs rough and almost stalls off idle to about 1000 rpm ?

The other thing is that Sydney nearly took us alive. It's a place I'd happily never visit again. Ever!
Loanrangie, not sure if we are on the same wavelength here. LPG is fine, petrol had been nearly as good as LPG, but after the pop something has happened to the petrol side of things. The LPG mixer wouldn't influence that as far as I can grasp at the moment.
