Heater matrix leak

Was fossicking around and found that heater matrix disconnected, heater in/out hoses off and radiator lines fed back on themselves - heater bypassed.

So, make it right, I hooke it all back up again.

Fiddle with hoses, looks like a hose broke so previous owner did an on the fly fix.

No worries, done.

Do the fluid, fine.

Next day, driving along turn on the heater and the windshield fogs up.

So I'm reasonably sure it's the heater matrix.

Easy thing would be just to bypass the heater.

Do any of the leak stop things work?

Should I take it out and solder it myself?

Send it out to get fixed?

Cheers

Simon.

Took me ages to find a leak in my heater. Eventually it got bad enough that I could see a drip coming from it in the engine bay so bypassed it as your previous owner did. Reason? Not needed much up here and a lot of work to get it out, fix it and replace it...

Be interested to hear how you go if you use self filling stuff but keep in mind that if that coolant level suddenly drops and you dont know it there can be considerable damage. This can happen as the leak can be in the engine bay and I believe the temperature guage (according to one earlier post) my not pick it up if it suddenly finds itself in air instead of water...

Repairing the matrix has never worked for me.... Just stick a new one in.

Mind you, the other thing you should check is that it's actually leaking. Before you change things, just reach under the heater heat exchanger box thingy and make sure that the rubber bung is removed from underneath so that all water can drain out. It's a common problem that it doesn't drain properly and ends up just holding the water causing the screen to mist up.

just a tip from my past experiences.....

i avoid using radiator leak stoppers....
the last few times i used it i had to replace the radiator due to it stopping the flow.....
my advice is to replace it with a new one like camel_landy said...
a repair will let go as soon as you are in the middle of nowhere.....

(for bush repairs.....i carry two-part epoxy putty to plug the leak....
and leave the cap loose to stop pressure pushing the water out)
