Defender TD5 trying to turn over by itself!!

If I hadn't happened to be next to the vehicle, I'm not sure I would believe it myself...

My Defender TD5 2000 model just tried to start itself. Ignition was OFF - (checked it several times) and out of nowhere the truck tried to turn over. It was in gear, and was pushing against the clutch. I grabbed the keys, jumped in, and turned it to ON position and OFF several times to no avail. Had to quickly disconnect Primary battery terminals for it to stop. Left it for 20 mins and tried to reconnect the battery - still trying to turn itself over (ignition in OFF position).. Some poultergeist was trying to make off with my truck!!!

So..any ideas on what the HELL is going on? Any thoughts welcomed.

Note- I'm in Cairns and its been raining for days. The only thing I can think of is that there is a short through moisture in the ignition (or dash) somewhere. Don't have a dry spot to pull it apart right now.

Remove the steering cowl as to get access to the ignition switch and unplug the lucar connector with the white/red wire...if this will cure things it means that the problem is within the switch, if not it's somewhere else and that's worst news cos it means it's a short to supply on the starter solenoid's feed along the harness and that's a nightmare to find

ive seen this from the following.

fuel in the solenoid from the FPR
corrosion in the start signal relay
    shorting in the harness.

+1^^^, to rule out a sticking relay remove fusible link FL5 from under-seat fusebox... this is better than remove the relay cos if you remove the relay you dont rule out a sticking switch too as if the switch is sticking the relay will close cos it gets feed on the coil but FL5 is on the contact if you see what i mean

OK thanks guys. I tried removing the red/white lead on the back of the ignition, but issue persists. Will look at the other options when I have some light/drier weather. Cheers.

Opened up the box under drivers seat and had a good look. Not good. Quite oily. Disconnected the red plug from ECU, and what do you know - oily.

Any suggestion as the best way to deal with this (apart from changing the injector loom)?

And do you think this would be the culprit? (I'm gonna do it anyway).

Hopefully my ECU is not marinated in engine oil....

Its easy enough to look inside the ECU. Some minor oil is usual on the terminals.
To save some $$ short term, buy a can of electrical component cleaner or even brake cleaner, remove the harness & give it a good drenching and drain off.
