Probably more likely a CV joint, possibly a half axle. But it could be a diff. Pull the level plug and have a peer inside, you should be able to see whether something is broken or one side is spinning freely.
Soo... Someone (me) was driving their td5 defender a bit hard (read, like a d?#khead) and something went bang!
Now I have no drive unless the centre diff is locked and when it isn't the front prop shift is spinning away doing nothing.
I have arb air lockers by the way...
Sound like front diff?
Either way sounds expensive 😭😭😭😭

What happens if you engage the front locker without the center locked?
If it's something broken on one side only (cv or axle) then locking the front diff will give you drive.

A broken crown wheel and pinion will probably be noisy. Do what Steve said. Lock the front diff and see.

Thanks guys.
Tried locking the front diff and still no drive without the centre locked. Just dropped it into the local landrover mechanic so we shall soon see the damage!

the later RD128 ARB's are prone to cracking around the main body inside the crown wheel location diameter, remove the crown wheel to check, its not obvious with it still fitted,

Turns out it was a cv. And further to that when I bought the vehicle I was told it had ashcroft cv's, even with a receipt!!
Instead however it's a plain old s#@tpart cv!
Time to buy something better!

Thanks for letting everyone know. Posting what turned out to be the problem is how everyone else builds up their knowledge.

A broken c.v. on only one side, or both sides?
