Interesting point. Are the lights illegal to have fitted, or illegal to use on the road. Would fitting light blocking covers, rendering them inoperable, satisfy the law? Let us know how you go getting the defect removed.

I knew it was illegal to use them on a public road but I didn't know having them fitted was illegal.

As Mick Marsh has already quoted, but I have emphasised the words "at the front".

    Section 7.3.4.3 of ADR 13 states;

"In length: at the front of the vehicle and fitted in such a way that the light emitted does not cause discomfort to the driver either directly or indirectly through the rear-view mirrors and/or other reflecting surfaces of the vehicle."

I'm putting roof mounted lights on the 101.
Wouldn't most driving lights fail 7.3.4.3?

Yep, so sticking them on the 101 like he said would be legal.

I would do mine too, but first I'll have to replace that ****ty little 35 amp alternator that mine runs...

No one likes to be spoken to in a manner they don't appreciate, so that's poor form.

As for nothing better to do comments - he works in the Highway Patrol, that's their gig (traffic stuff). Would a comment like 'why are you booking the speeders' be relevant to someone being locked up for stealing be relevant??

What did the defect notice say? What's the defect?

What did you do about his behaviour/attitude (apart from post it online)

Need to tell us all what the defect was so we can be informed.

Vehicle was defected for having roof mounted driving lights, and therefore not being compliant with the ADR as they are not at the front of the vehicle. I did say they are not driving lights but work lights on a separate circuit, the response was I don't care if there not even wired up, there not at the front of the vehicle therefore I'm defecting them!

    Unfortunately, the truth hurts
Their "gig" may be traffic, but there's different ways to do the job. One is to target easy numbers , the other is to actually make a difference and make the road safer. In most opinions he's taken option one.
Option two, to be like a cop stopping a theif would be to catch the morons overtaking in single lane areas over double white lines who will kill another road user, option one is to hide 5 kms down the road in a divided dual lane straight section and book those doing 5-15ks over. Which do you think makes the road safer?
It is either the same cop or station who is running a campaign against roof lights in that area to be brought up in parliament he must have annoyed a fair few people

But what was the reason he wrote.
It's not what is said, it's what can be proved.
You could possibly argue they are on the front half of the car and the light emitted does not cause discomfort to the driver either directly or indirectly through the rear-view mirrors and/or other reflecting surfaces of the vehicle.
