For removing rust from smaller items that can be removed completely, try this technique which I have shown on my website:

I did a long range fuel tank in the same way - you can see where the tank only submerged halfway into the solution.
You can also see that the tank is so clean it has started to rust almost immediately after the solution was washed off.
