Are you sure its in the diff? remove the fill plug and hold the crown wheel with a finger to confirm. You may also have slop in the diff gears and both ends of the half shafts.

AFAIK pinion/crown backlash is set by adjustment of the carrier something ops: which means pulling the carrier out of the housing.

    Ahh ok (same here)
In that case the first thing i would change is the end caps on the axels. The spider thing on the end of the axel that holds tha half shaft in. This has to bit a tiny bit lose (ie worn) to give alot of back lash in the gear box, or diff. So change thses first

I`d check the splines on your drive members and half shafts, if they ar`nt to bad I`d probably be inclined to leave it alone if its not whining etc, as you can spend a lot of money trying to get rid of backlash and end up with very little improvement. Just accept that every bit of backlash adds up to quite a bit starting from your input gear thru to your half shafts.

Check the nuts & bolts on the rear propshaft to handbrake drum are tight, we see this a lot in our workshop were they have come loose especially on the Defenders.
Also check for wear on the rear axle splines.
If it was the diff it would be noisy.
