95 Rangie classic wants manual box, any help & tips

Hi
I want to put a manual box in my rangie for better fuel economy and more control of road.
Ive heard that a GQ 5 speed box is a tough one to beat. Any comments or other options.
Has anyone done this and what mods need to be done.
PS Im not going for a competition vehicle, just a good allrounder.

Think Les Richmond Austomotive have done a Nissan conversion.

I have heard lots about Toyota Supra boxes - light and strong to be used behind Rover V8 motors in sports cars, cannot see a reason why not in a Rangie - try http://www.triumphroverspares.com.au/ they did a kit.

Any v8 110 one will fit. Depands on age
TDi (LT77) one will fit as well but needs longer bell housing and input shaft. So bit more hassle.
some of the 1980's V8 Range rover had the LT77 (which is fitted to the 200 Tdi defenders)

An R380 out of a disco or defender is the way to go, will fit in place of the ZF and all parts are bolt in.

be careful - R380 from petrol and diesel motors are different, so I have been told.

If its to go into a 95 RR, then R380 is the only way to go in my opinion. GQ box is strong and has good low 1st but is very truck like. Its also quite an expensive conversion as its all custom.

R380 should all bolt up easily and is not a bad box if you are not going to use the vehicle offroad too much.

The GQ box is awesome.
I have been driving around a mates comp ute for a few days and its a far better shift than my 4 speed or Dads county 5speed - granted I have never driven with R380.

As said before LRA sell kits or do the conversion.

How often is 5th under load anyway? All other gears are very strong.

What about an LT95 4 speed with a 1:1 High range ratio? Cheap and very tough. And with the 1:1 ratio, your fuel economy wont be too bad either.

But than again, its quite truck like, and it does only have 4 speeds...plus its a package deal with the transfer case integral.

Nah, scratch that, thats a dumb idea with a vehicle that new.

To fit a LT95, you would need to modify the floor because of the poisition of the gearstick and transfer leaver are totally diffrent. I put the ZF auto into my 83 and I needed to aquire a floor from a early Torque-flite Rangie because the transfer linkages would foul the floor fitment as well as the auto shifter.

I can't see the problem with autos off-road bar the downhill stuff, even then it's controlable to an extent. As far as rock-crawling and hill-climbing is concerned, autos are much better since you don't need to ride the clutch to maintain control. Sand-driving also is another area where autos have the advantage, no need to loose momentum when changing up or down gears like a manual.

I see LRA are looking into modifying a ZF auto to allow lock-up in first gear, should be interersting and with a 30% MD reduction gears it would be almost the same first low as a manual, probably better.

My advice, stick with the auto. Both transmission types have there pros and cons
