300 tdi broken water pump blades

After failing to proceed yesterday due to a noisy wobbly water pump, I've pulled it off today to find three of the impeller blades have snapped off and gone missing. I've looked at the workshop manual diagram of flow, and unless I'm mistaken, the blades have gone into the block. They are not made of magnetic material, so there's no chance of retrieval by that method. My question is this. Where are they likely to lodge and will they cause a blockage to the flow, or don't we know? I've searched and while I've found descriptions of similar occurrences, there's no mention of what was done about the missing blades. Is there a chance they'll work around to the radiator sometime in the future, or sink to the bottom of some gallery in the bock?

My guess would be somewhere in the block and possibly restricting flow to one of the head galleries as they are smaller and less likely to allow them to pass, depending on how small they are they could even have made it to the thermostat housing just behind the thermostat- i would remove it and check.

With the aid of a small mirror, I was able to find and remove one of the blades from where it had gone from the output of the pump and begun it's journey into the block, so there are two more. Do they need to be found and removed or not?

If you remove the manifolds you could take out the welch plugs and blow air around the cylinder castings to dislodge the broken blades.

If they got dislodged with the air, where would they go, and would they be accessible for removal?

In behind the p gasket there is a decent cavity where they would probably sit. There is not much room to get around #1 Cylinder via the water jacket.

I took off the water pump housing to get access behind the P gasket. Couldn't see or feel anything there so it's going back together. I just have to hope the blades sit tight at the bottom of the block.

Probably do different to when some mechanics don't remove the leaky welch plugs and just hit them into the block and fit new ones.

Was old school practise, if they were hard to get out, mechanics used to punch them in. Have seen the odd vehicle with this.
