    Authorised LR Dealers too!!

Those who've read my earlier tirade about the efforts of the Darwin LR Dealer, might recall I mentioned another poor victim of their incompetence. His story, if you're interested:

This chap, who happens to be staying in the same caravan park as us, has a new Disco III TDV6 and was in need of it's first service (at 20,000 km!). So he books it into the local (and only one for about 1500km) LR dealer and arrives at the appointed time three days after booking in.

We're both sitting in the customer 'lounge' when his is driven in just after mine. It sits in a service bay for about half an hour but neither if us see it raised on the hoist as one would expect for an oil change. It's driven back out and 15-odd minutes later, a female service receptionist (didn't the blokes have the guts?) is sent in to explain to him, "Because it's so new (He's had it since April...), we don't have any oil filters or the correct oil for it. But we've checked all the oil levels and they're OK.

Receptionist, "Perhaps you can get it done in Katherine." I pipe up, "There's no LR dealer in Katherine, the nearest one's in Alice Springs". Receptionist, "Are you going that way?" Customer, "No, we're going to Qld." Receptionist, " What about Mt. Isa, then?" Me, "There's no dealer in Mt Isa anymore, either." This gentleman takes it all very well and he and his wife leave.

What sort of incompetent cretins are we dealing with here? 1. They had three full days to discover that they didn't have the parts and oil to service this vehicle, but did they call him and tell him? 2. Why doesn't an authorised dealer have an oil filter for a models that's been on sale for about six months?

I dearly love our Disco but I despair at the continuous stupidity and incompetence I see from Land Rover Aust and their dealers... I fear the future of the marque, in this country at least, is going to be quite short.

Why didn't that silly FI ring LR Melbourne and get a couple filters on the plane after booking it in? I have dropped in on that dealer when I was in Darwin and they are absolute w**ker's.

On the flip side of service, I went to Compaq in Darwin for a computer DVD drive for a laptop. Yes Sir, be here tommorow at 4 pm. I was, it was, job done. Now that's service. The part was flown in from Perth!!.

    LR get your S**t together.

On my trip north I took 2 air filters, 1 oil filter, and five litres of oil for top ups just in case. I only fitted one air filter on the whole trip.
But then I know they are hopeless up there.

By carrying a couple of LR specific spares at least you can get the oil changed anywhere, or DIY.

POSTSCRIPT: It just gets better and better!!

After I wrote the original post above, I spoke to the gentleman who owns the TDV6. Apparently he did phone someone after the debacle at Kerry LR. Not sure if it was LRA or his 'home' dealer. He said they agreed the situation was not acceptable and agreed to fly up a filter and any other parts that would be needed and that they would be at Kerry's on Saturday morning.

So, I'm talking to him yesterday afternoon and ask how it went. "Don't ask!", he says, "They sent the wrong parts". Is there no end to the incompetence??

By the way, I learned this bloke has previously owned '99 and '03 Td5 Discos, so LR have done very well out if him - and this is how they treat him. What chance for we who run older second-hand vehicle?

To the suggestion that you carry your own consumable parts. Good idea and I do this myself. But we here on AULRO are enthusiasts. The general new 4WD buyer isn't and they (quite rightly) expect to be able to get their new vehicle properly looked after at authorised LR dealers. And if they are are continually stuffed-around by these idiots, they will not remain LR owners for long. Do Nissan and Toyota owners have to carry their own normal service parts?...

This sort of thing is not acceptable from any dealer or make.
The other brands are just as bad though. Canberra Star is terrible and You learn that the only people who use their workshop are the diplomats who don't care and the new owners who don't know. Long term mercedes owners will not use them. Nissan in canberra has been caught out several times by people I know for lying about servicing vehicles. This is why I hate to pay a mechanic to do work on my cars. I di it myself or go through friends who do it for me or take me to the mechanic they know and I get the old parts back to verify what they have done. I will also stand and watch them do it.
