    Castrol Fully Synthetic Engine Oil

I have purchased Castrol Fully Synthetic Engine Oil for my 2012, 2.2 110 Defender 5W-30, as my owner manual stipulates.
Q.1. Is Synthetic Vs Conventional Oil ok?
Q.2. Should I be using 15W-40 Oil which is preferred for Australian Climate?
We are coming into the winter months and I don't intend to travel to hotter climates this season nor do we experience cold European winter temps, I reside in NSW Hunter Region.
My intention is to drain oil completely and change oil filter as well prior to the next 20K service.
    Cheers

Full synthetic 5w-30 will be fine,as long as it is the correct spec oil. There are different specs in the 5w-30 range.

Mineral oil cannot be used, all LR's have used fully synthetic engine oil, since the late 90's.

I have never heard of 15w-40 being preferred.

    Correct Spec?
I will trawl Dr Google, see if I can't find more.
From your post I'm confident that I have the correct engine oil.
I looked on both the Castrol engine Oil site and on Land Rovers site, and they are promoting their most expensive line of synthetic oil which has titanium in it? Sounds like a good marketing team/partnership to me.
    Thanks Again

Have a look at this, although it might not have a lot about the 2.2l as it is new.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/7...k130-more.html

The oil spec will be in the vehicle handbook. You can also check on the Castrol site.
I had a quick search on here(AULRO),but couldn't find much on the 2.2,lots on 2.4 engine oil specs.I think the 2.2l is slightly different to the 24.

It will be C1 or 2,ford spec M?'something.

The Castrol oil you have may cover all the specs, and be OK for 2.2l.and 2.4l,and some other engines, such as D4 engines.

Specs also depend on whether your vehicle has a DPF or not.

Hope the above is not to confusing, keep searching on here, there is lots of good info.

Any A5 5W 30 that complies with the Ford spec for non DPF motors WSS/M2C913 B/C .

I used Castrol Edge professional but found it too expensive.
Changed to Total Quartz 9000 Future NFC A5W-30 and is the correct spec for my 2012 2.2 130 HCPU
I change oil and filter 10K intervals. Also fitted a Stahlbus oil drain plug to save replacing the OEM plug. It also helps direct the oil via a tube. The Puma oil comes out horizontalfrom the sump and you need a BIG tray

    Puma 2.2 Compatible Oils

    FYI
Found this thread on the Defender2.net website UK, may be of interest but I note that I don't know half the brands listed.

    Puma 2.2 Compatible Oils
Due to another discussion surrounding the limited availability of correct oil for the Puma 2.2 below is a list of oil that meets the requirement of Ford's WSS-M2C-934-B Standard.

NOTE! - This is only applicable to 2.2 Pumas as the earlier 2.4 needs to have the widely available WSS-M2C913-B (or C) standard

    All these oils are available in 5W30;

    Liqui Molly Top Tec 4500
    Millers XF Longlife C1
    Shell Helix Ultra Professional
    Shell Helix Diesel Ultra
    Motul 8100 Eco-Clean+
    Mobil Super 3000 Formula C1
    Granville FS-M
    Castrol Edge Professional C1
    Valvoline SynPower ENV C1
    Pro Advance PC1050
    Fuchs Titan GT1 PRO C-1

Thats the spec for motors with DPF. An Australian market 2012 2.2 wont have a DPF so the WSS-M2C913-B (or C) is what you need.

Be careful as oils are sometimes named differently in the UK than here.I have noticed this with Castrol oils occasionally.
