Blown Clutch and while i'm there lets do all the oil seals
2 weeks ago while i was out Bush i had the clutch let go on the Defender. Lucky for me it was not in a location that would have been a beast to get it out.
So after it was towed to Hardcore 4x4 on the sunday night we got into it on the Thurs that week. Well more to the point i got into it.
I started off by removing the tailshafts and fan cowling and then removed the big crossmember and dropped the gearbox mounts and then removed the floor and tunnel covers. this made it very easy to get into.
Then came the fun part in getting the Box out.
It took some mucking around with jacks, engine cranes and tyre levers but it came out.
Then i could see why the clutch let go.
It lost all the lining on the pressure plate side. and i dont mean a little bit the whole lot. so the last clutch throw was the one that ripped it all off.
How did i climb hills and do everything i did only km's before it went pop?
Anyhow i thought id replace all the seals and gaskets in the box and transfer while i was there.
Saturday i cleanned the box up and replaced the output shaft seals and the gearbox input shaft seal and gaskets. i was going to crack the 2 apart and do the lot, but have decided not to as it was not leaking between them or anywhere accually... ive never seen a dry landrover gearbox except for this one...
Wednesday just gone i pulled the rear mainseal/flywheel housing off and replaced the rear main seal and gasket between it and the block. that is a nasty job... took more time to clean it all up than fitting the seal and gasket.
Refitted the flywheel and loctited the bolts on for the flywheel. Torqued them up to spec and thats where i'm up to.
Friday i'll get the clutch on the machined flywheel and gearbox fitted... or attempt...
So far with the following parts i'm up for about $800 just in parts...
130 Clutch Kit
Rear main
Gasket Flywheel to block
Clutch Master Cylinder
Clutch slave Cylinder
Transfer Box Gasket Kit
GearBox Gasket Kit
Throw out Fork
Clip to hold Push rod on the Throw out Fork
Slipper pads that drives the Throw out bearing
Staple that holds the throw out bearing
All were bought from Karcraft
Thats it for now.

And to think, if you'd gone to an LR dealer you'd have been up for $800 just for a clutch kit  (at least that's what I was quoted for the Disco)

Yeah, I had a clutch destroy itself in my Rangie a few months ago, the rivets were loose for some reason, and they let go when i was in low range 1st going down a hill.
Turns out some of the lining on both sides was minced up, but there was enough left to continue to transmit power, so i clutchless shifted my way home.
I notice you removed the g/box to do yours...is it easier to remove the box than the engine with diesels? I took the engine out to do mine (i spose being a petrol V8 it would be lighter than a diesel), it was alot easier than taking out the G/box.

Fenders and Discos are alot different in design. id only pluck an engine if i had to do something to it as well.....
Every car i've done i've plucked the g/box with the engine in situ. on the exception on FWD's
Fenders are easy so to speak as they have room to work under them.

Yippy Back on the Road........
New Clutch, oils seals replaced and a full service done......
Damn if i had to pay someone else to do it it would have cost me a fortune...... $800 just in parts and forget the 20 odd hours i spent doing it with and extra 4 or so for Dave from Hardcore4x4 to help me get the box back in.
I also checked the wheel bearings and flushed the brake fluid and gave some fresh oil all round and just checked it over.
So it should be right for the big trip this weekend.

I'm dreading when I have to do mine eventually...
A local mechanic who has done a few Disco 300Tdi clutches reckons it's a lot quicker to pull the engine, although I'll be doing mine the same as yours to rectify at least one dodgy seal.

If you think about it, your nuts not doing the rear main while your there. i also did the input shaft seal on the LT77 and the output/drive flanges on the LT230 as well as lots of gaskets and stuff.
I replaced my clutch with a 130 clutch and it is a heavier clutch, but not by much......
