TDI Performance

I have been experiencing TDI (1996) power perfomrance issues when towing trailer of 1300kg (trailer a bit wider than car, but not as high). The problem is essentially that it is very difficult to maintain a speed of 100kmh without getting the auto to kick down a gear from drive. I had no expectaions of getting to the 100kmh mark fast but had expected to be able to sit on this speed quite comfortably. Is this a common problem with the TDI and if so have other people consdiered using a intercooler to improve towing performance.

    odd combination of expectations

    tdi and performance

mine pulls my camper trailer just fine on the flat, poke a slope in it's face and yes, i pull the auto back a notch and sit on 90k.

i dislike the way the gearbox wont kick down till 80k. 88k would be spot on

patience and tdi go hand in hand

I thought the 300 TDi was already intercooled :?

    no problems here

my 300 tdi is intercooled and I just towed a tandem trailer through the Otways in southern vic with no trouble at all, once I am off the mark it sits on a 110k easily, hills didn't bother it, getting it off the mark is a different kettle of fish unfortunately..

maybe need to get it intercooled and put on a dyno.

    Regards

mine is intercooled as standard, before any mods would tow o.k. at 100 (110 comfortably......120-130 was a bit of an ask under tow) but as mentioned before off the mark is a bit of a tedious task.

I have done a dew mods with a good foam air filter, new/larger tube between turbo and intercoller and 2 hiclones. Since then the bottom end power is greatly improved and the "holding" power at speed (even towing) is drastically improved.

    Cheers

my tdi used to halve fuel econ when towing my car trailer it weighs about 1 ton , up & down from top to third all the time especially thru the hills would end up locking it in third. but that was before injector pump recoed & injectors cleaned, haven't towed trailer since this work completed, but it has far more pull up hills than it ever had before. All Tdis are intercooled.

Might be worth getting it checked over. All sorts of things can affect performance, like crud in the intercooler, de-lamination of the intercooler to plenum chamber pipe etc etc.
