I already know what caused the issue, it was oil starvation to the top end caused by poor servicing and/or lots of short trips.

I should really have checked this area when I had the heads off before and had to replace the rocker gear

    type of oil?

Its not often we get a valve stem seal failure,,
just trying to get some facts on why,,

and on how I can avoid it--

I always service my engines at 5K intervals and it is my daily driver.

I bought the engine second hand and was told it had only done about 50K since a full rebuild by TRS in Sydney.

I noticed a small coolant leak from the head gasket so I pulled the heads in Nov last year only to find a lot of gunk in the upper oilways and heat stressed rocker gear. As I said, I should have checked the valve area when I had the heads off then

SO the cause is poor servicing it seems. I note the wear on the valves was not even but all the seals were as hard as a rock, again I assume because of heat stress

would it be wise to look at bottom end bearings as well?

I thought long and hard about that and decided not to at the moment, possibly a bad decision.

The mains and bigends have their own direct high pressure feed from the oil pump I believe, so they are less likely to have been starved for oil.

The cam gets a lot of splash from the sump as well and it seems OK

So it's a bit of educated risk taking at this time
