    Td5 Harmonic Balancer Bolt

I am about to fit a new harmonic balancer to my Td5.

Rave says to use a new bolt.
There are lots of other jobs where Rave also says to use new bolts, but in some cases the old ones can go back.

So is a new bolt for the balancer an absolute must?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

IMHO at 400Ft Lbs it is a stretch bolt so may have already stretched and when tensioned up again may at some stage snap, which would ruin one's day.
I must admit I did reuse one on a BMW M3 but it was only 200Ft Lbs with no problem.
On balance when I have to do mine I will certainly buy a new bolt.

We replaced ours a few months ago and we didn't replace as our mechanic said he has not replaced the bolts and never had any issues with other vehicles

I can't make statements from my own experience as i'm quite dumb when it comes to mechanics but i remember what my father said who was mechanic for 45 years then he retired that any bolt which was tightened to more than 250NM once should not be used again... but he was a very scrupulous guy... as i see the crank damper's bolt should be at 460NM so if i was you i'd put a new genuine one

What's the cost of doing the job properly?, maybe $10. It's a no brainer to me.

I haven't priced one yet, but saw one on fleabay for $44, hence my reason for asking.

$35 actually. New one coming from LR.

If I ever find the bloke that invented TTY bolts I will punch him in the nose

I am sure bolt manufacturers must have struck a deal with the car makers, so they can sell more bolts.

Just like I am sure that spanner manufactures made a deal with car makers to introduce odd size bolts, so as to sell more tools.
