Mixing tyre sizes 265/60/18 & 255/55/19

A difference of 2mm can freak the car out.
Found this out when I had my tyre pierced a while back...

Vehicle was always 'correcting' on corners...
To the point it wore that tyre down very quickly to the others... once it caught up (so to speak) it behaved normally.

Hence why you don't mix brands and types.

It's a difference of 15mm and 7 revolutions per km... a noticeable difference to the vehicle.

I have 5 BFG 265/60r18 - with one being a spare. I was looking at getting a second spare and was hoping I didn't have to buy another Compomotive 18 inch rim as a sapre- I could just buy a second hand OEM 19 inch rim and use 255/55r19.


Looks like I'll have to come up with another plan. any suggestions ?

Garfield, a standard 18" D4/D3/RRS rim will fit on the rear of your D4, just not the front, and they can be picked up pretty cheaply. That will mean you'll have to do a shuffle from back to front to use your second spare, but at least you can then keep it all a consistent size and brand.

I should have taken a photo. There was a significant difference in height (at least 20mm) between cooper AT3 265/60/18s and HT 255/55/19s. There was also a small difference between cooper AT & HT tyres in 265/60/18s. I have two HTs as spares. Ironically the cooper HTs are load rated at 114 while the ATs are 110.

Whistle I did know about the problem of OEM 17 and 18 inch rims not fitting my new D4 before I bought it about 6 months ago , its surprising no one else has come to the party and built an 18 inch steel rim that fits over the bigger callipers on the new D4's . Some thing like a Sunraiser steel wheel would be good - keep it simple and strong.


p.s. I believe there is a company in Germany that makes rims that fit the later D4's - but they are more expensive than the Compomotive rims.

and without going off the subject of the thread, by Land Rover not providing a 17 or 18 inch OEM option for newer/future Discoverys and RR, does this mean they are going away from producing seriously cable 4WD's and just concentrating on the black tarmac brigade vehicles sitting on thin rubber ?


Land Rover have always prided themselves on producing seriously capable 4WD vehicles

The JLR TR is pretty good in most situations. The huge brakes are both for braking and TR purposes. Almost all the city off roaders would spend 90% on road and the other in moderate off road conditions. 19" & 20" tyres and huge brakes give a closer car like drive and easily cope with that 10%. I really can't notice a difference on 18". So I get why the went that way. Although I'm a bit surprised JLR didn't sign up Compomotive for an exclusive supply arrangement for 18" wheels. The you would pay $700-1000 per wheel.

Not to mention "Sunnies" are:
A) Ugly
B) Heavy
