    Mixing tyre sizes 265/60/18 & 255/55/19

I have a set of 4 compomotives ready to go on the L322 fitted with 265/60/18s. However I need one spare at least if I'm going to use them.

I also have the original size of 255/55/19s and I have another compomotive I bought earlier as a spare but it has a 255/60/18 which match the 19s diameter.

The diameter difference between these two sets is about 12mm. The question is can I use the 255/55/19 & 255/60/18 as a 1st and 2nd spare? I will get another 265/60/18 tyre eventually. However I might like to have a 2nd spare on some trips and the only choice at the present is a 255/55/19.

    Thanks.

I fitted one 255/50R20 with the others 275/55R20 for a test run of around 30km on gravel and sealed roads up to 100 kph without triggering any ABS faults looking to identify the source of a noise. The smaller tyre is currently the spare so will get used until I get back home to fit the full size spare although I intend getting another full size tyre for the 2nd spare. Your spare tyre size difference wouldn't bother me.

Tyres can have a tread depth be down to 2mm when people put an unused spare tyre on the car, with a tread depth of around 10mm. That's a 16mm diameter difference.

And having had to do it after a scrap of steel on the road destroyed my LHR I can tell you The vehicle wasn't completely happy about it when making turns...

In a pinch it would work, but I'd suggest getting a correct sized one - even a good second hand one.

Is the FFRR like the D4 in as much as certain 18" LR rims will fit on the back? If so, I've got a rim here that you can have.

And given 265/60-18 is a standard Playdo size, they can be picked up with much cheapness on Gumtree or the bay of E. I'd rather pay $50 for a second hand tyre than risk is personally

    Thanks for the replies gents.

I know different sizes is not ideal. I will pick up a 265/60/18 eventually.

Dave I think you might be right about a disco 18" rim fitting the back. So I will take you up on the offer as a second spare. Thanks.

I ran into this problem this week when trying to match a 19inch to 285 60 18s for a second spare... Problem is there's no such thing as a tyre that matches the rolling diameter in 19". I ditched the wheel and decided to find another 18 one day. Could be being over cautious though...

You're more than welcome to come down and we can try it on for size, save having something that's no use to you.

Slightly late to this but I have tested that combination for about 2km on the bitumen including turning plenty of corners without issue or fault.
There is also a very old post I read where garrycol drove all the way to Canberra I think.

    255/55/R19 and 265/60/R18

However, I agree with Tombie that it's only for use in a pinch ..... middle of nowhere and a 2nd flat happens.

Note also that once the 18s have worn down and if using a brand new 19 as the spare, the difference in diameter will be even less.

I just tried using the tyre comparison calculator at https://tiresize.com/comparison/ between 255/55r19 and 265/60r18 and it states the tyre circumference is 1.7% greater between the two tyres. But surely this must change between types and brands of tyres
