Disco Tdi fuel sender/gauge help needed

1998 Ser 1 Tdi which has no fuel level signal at the dash (shows empty) along with low fuel warning light on constantly. There's no power at the tank sender, all fuses test ok so can anyone suggest a common fault? I'm kinda thinking it's a broken or disconnected wire between the sender and dash but have no idea where it travels so if someone can give me an idea of where I can access it along the route I'd appreciate it.
cheers
Mark

 Hi Mark,
Now that's an annoying fault and the first time I at least have heard of it.
Do you have the RAVE manuals. If not then obtaining them is highly recommended.
I would start with the earth (E400) which according to my manual suggests that it is located in the left hand rear of the luggage compartment attached to the D pillar. Its a black wire.
Sometimes it is best to start afresh with new wiring.
Good luck mate.

 Mark
Are you other gauges and instrument pack O.K?
Fuse 14 (fuse box underneath steering) supplies voltage to the pack.
The pack then measures the resitance trough the sender unit on a green-black wire and activates the gauge accordingly.
You can do the following tests:
Remove the sender unit from the tank and measure resistance at the conector on the sender unit when moving the floating bit up and down.
(Black plastic bit on small steel rod which is fixed to a potentiometer).
You then measure resistance at the connector on top of the unit. (Harness disconnected.) With the floating device up top which would be a full tank you should read about 19 Ohms and with the device down low which would be a low fuel level you should read about 245 Ohms. If the reading does not change you need a new sender unit which is probabely going to be case.
Hope this helps

 Hi Mark,
Did you find the fault, I've just had the same thing happen in my 95 tdi. All gauges are working except the fuel gauge. Low warning light is constantly on. Fuses are all OK. I'm stumped, I've traced the wires underneath but no immediate indicators on the cursory search. I was hoping to get around removing storage boxes etc to get to the fuel sender unit. Any other ideas?
Second question for anyone.
Does the RAVE CD operate on later versions of Adobe reader than reader 3. I had a version on CD which is now unreadable but it used version 3 which conflicted with version 6 on my computer?
Thanks
Pete
