96 Disco 300tdi, 150k.
Recently discovered and fixed (by tightening) a few leaks at hose unions which got me thinking it might be time to replace all hoses but a quick trip to the supplier for hose prices (see below) and a total of nearly $500 got me thinking some more.
Is it necessary to replace hoses as a matter of course at a certain age, if so which ones are most critical?
I know they should be inspected and if brittle or cracked then they would obvously be swapped out but leaks from a few different hoses at around the same time set off my alarm, especially as Ive previously been up for a full engine rebuild on another vehicle when it dropped a bottom hose on the highway.
The service manual is pretty quite on the matter as I recall.

I have replaced all of the water hoses on my 92 rangie 3.9.
Now you have got me worried about the oil cooler hoses and the transcooler hoses. Worry worry. Many in the USA turn into fireballs because of the trans hose letting go from corrosion.
If you are worried about the $500 think of the alternative.

I presume that you have shopped around for the best prices (outside LR dealers)
I did all of my coolant hoses at 120,000km which should be a reasonable interval subject to checking in between. There others are subject to inspection.
The first two oil hoses are worth having modified by some one like Pirtek who will modify the swaged ends of the metal hose sections to allow just the replacement of the rubber sections in future. The standard connections are prone to failure and you have to throw the lot away.
If the old hoses are in reasonable condition thay can be kept as emergency spares so you are not throwing $500 away.

I had a leaky oil cooler hose and after getting the price for the genuine articale went to a local hydraulic hose repair place. They removed the hose from where it was pressed onto the metal pipe and attached a new fitting and hose. I can't remember the exact price but it was less than half the price of a genuine replacement. That was about 18 months ago and no leaks since. I removed the old hose and pipe in the morning and dropped it to the shop and picked it up later that day. Any hydraulics shop should be able to do the same thing. Definately worth a try for the oil cooler hoses, probably for one of the power steering hoses as well.
