TurboTech here in Perth (great place for excellent service) rebuilt mine about 2 years ago. The guys said that mine was just about as bad as these turbos get and that it would have been half the amount if I had caught the problem earlier. So, 2 years ago, the ultimate rebuild of a 300Tdi Garrett was $600.

BigJon, I used to, but I'm retired now, if they are charging $100/hour now, I might get back into it, anyway at $100/hour it shouldn't take 6 hours to remove and replace a turbo, Regards Frank.

Report back, smoke geatly reduced except under load.... not as bad but not good enough either. I need to replace the valve "caps" and adjust this week, any thoughts on if this may be causing an issue as they are "out" at the moment... and a little noisy.

Smoke appears black to maybe grey? seems to give an extra puff at about 2000rpm (Turbo spooling up?) then through to gear change. whilst coasting or idling no smoke. Usual puff on start up. Clean airfilter. Oil change due in about 1000km

Ran injector cleaner previous tankful (and did a highway run towing about 7-800kgs) for 400km then empty trip back sitting on around 105km/h

Well after my last post, the Dealer said after they had a look the shaft is just moving abit, the smoke was getting worst, not just on start up (cold) so it went to Adelaide Turbo Svc's fins hd broken off the shaft had more play than the Springboks so it went from a basic rebuild ($550-650) to all the guts peplaced $1500. Someone made a comment about Black ------L/R, good job there the swearing bars on

2 years ago, ours was $1200 to replace pretty much the whole thing, impeller was hitting the inside of the housing and th compressor had marks on it like it had started as well.

To me it was just getting a little noisy.

    It was at 220000kms.

you can buy a new Garrett GT25 (ball bearing) for $1100. Garrett sales info reckons spools up faster and more durable than journal bearing turbo.

Apparently these were $3000 a couple of years ago.

Well the price has now jumped to $1800 the whole guts is gone and the housing needs a skim, had alook at the shaft today nearly 1mm step in the shaft, so much for just a slight movement, going to be a slight movement when I put it somewhere in the SVC managers....
    Cheers

PM Jase and see if he has any VVT's and manifolds left that fit the 2.8HS engine. Wouldn't cost too much more than your reco and a big performance upgrade.

The other alternative is get in touch with MTQ/DTS and get their Mitsubishi TD04 upgrade kit (including manifold) for not too much more either.
