    As Isuzurover says, possibly as a result of overheating.

    Yes we thought overheating or someone's put petrol in it maybe. The oil rings appear to be shot in 1 and 2 as well.

    So are we right in thinking the block is a write off with those gouges in the top?

    Yes. In theory they could be built back up with weld but that would be a last resort.

    you might get a way with a block decking but....

    Id build it up with weld then grind it flat, crack check it and see.

    if the rest of its ok go get a 2.25P and use its block to make a diesel.
