Let's not forget, in the case of a Bas remap, Defender at least, the factory Ecu is kept as a spare, the ultimate fullback. A blank Ecu impart of the kit
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

I have been writing maps and flashing ECUs for Saabs for quite a few years, and I always recommend that you buy a 2nd hand ECU, give me your VIN so I can download the correct base map for your vehicle, then only flash the 2nd ECU so that you always have the original ECU to fall back on for any reason, and also as the ECUs get older, the flash memory chips get less likely to have a successful write. I have a few dead ECUs here that one day I will get around to replacing the chips on due to the fact that they have a brand of chip that has been found to degrade faster than others, hence did not write successfully, even when higher write voltages were applied.

Mr GOE,Gordon(GGhaggis) is due back from his Kimberley Adventures later next week, around the 10th I believe.
Before he left he mentioned a flash tune for the 3.0lt.Shoot him a PM or contact him thru Green Oval Experience for his thoughts.

This is starting to get scary with all the risks associated with ECU remap. Having a second ECU with the remap on it certainly sounds the safer way to go - but not sure how hard it is to get a second hand ECU. Also I need to check with the supplier of the ECU remap whether they actually open the ECU unit or install the remap through the diagnostic port ( which would obviously be preferable). Unfortunately all this stuff is not my area of expertise.

Maybe I put the ECU remap on the "back burner" for now, as the standard 3.0lt TDV6 has "satisfactory" power/torque for most uses. ECU remap seems a bit of a "luxury" at present.

Yes. Gordon has found the latest iteration of KESS V2 has now got the 3.0 tri-code protocols sorted.

They are only in the latest listing showing 2015+ but I'm confident they will cover the 2012+ without complication.

A second ECU won't work on the D4 like it does with the Defender and TD5s
Once the vehicle is programmed to recognise the replacement ECU the old one will no longer work on the vehicle.

Only way around this is Cloning - which requires both ECUs to be cracked open and an exact duplicate made.

Don't fear a quality remap, but understand what you are doing is voluntarily voiding parts of your warranty - regardless of what tuners say - increases power and torque can lead to engine or driveline issues and therefore the manufacturer is in their rights to claim such.

To revert back to stock to claim a warranty is a version of fraudulent behaviour if trying to claim a warranty on a driveline item that is likely a failure from additional power/torque.

However if you're looking to just move up to the SDV6 outputs then there would be little come back.

Would be happy with SDV6 performance outcome. Just that little more torque would be nice - especially if the vehicle gets loaded up with equipment and a 4WD camper .

The horror story I tell is such because I forgot to mention that those ECUs I have that are in need of new flash chips, are from between 1994 and 1996, so it is understandable. Modern chips have a very very low failure rate in comparison.
