TD5 starter motor

Hi all,
some of you may remember the intermittent ignition starting problem I had - and thanks for all the helpful responses. As it turned out the starter was worn out and needed an overhaul. I took it to the local auto electrician who jumped under the car, had a bit of a look and said it was a pretty standard arrangement attracting a standard reconditioning fee of $200. I booked it in, job was done and car is now starting perfectly!

I purchased my 01 Disco II td5 10 weeks ago 2nd hand. It had done 56K and had never been off road, no dust anywhere. 3 weeks ago had the same problem with starting and had to get the starter motor bushes and piston replaced as they were worn out. The sparky said it should be right for 10 years or so. I was not impressed that the factory fitted number lasted only 4 years. I wonder if it was just the one in a million that fails early or can you actually shorten the life of the starter motor by over cranking. At least it was fixed in time to go playing in the Canunda National Park sand dunes the following weekend and outclassed a number of OTHER 4wds.
