Need a reconditioned alternator
Hi All
Does anyone know where I can get my Magneti Marelli 100amp alternator (300tdi 1996 discrovery) reconditioned or where I can buy a new one?
Or is there another type of alternator that will fit and do the same job?
I live in Brisbane QLD

Hi robricco,
I assume that the existing alternator has done at least 150,000 km?
If you can spare the vehicle then obviously you could have the existing unit reconditioned (probably new brushes or one or more could be stuck).
If not then really the only choice is a new or reconditioned magnetti marelli. A new one will cost $400+.
Not sure where in QLD is the best place but I bought mine (new) at Graeme Cooper in Sydney.
Be aware that the pulley diameter on the older 300 Tdi is different to the later models (as is the main belt length). So you will need to make sure that the pulley is changed over if you get a later model alternator otherwise the tacho will read higher. Also the earth connection for the tacho to the body of the alternator is different.
I am pulling my old one apart this weekend to see if it can be reconditioned easily.
As my Disco gets a bit of off road and the alternator sucks in a fair bit of crap I am interested to find out if mine was a stuck brush issue.
BTW what were the symptoms of failure? Bouncing tacho needle?

Apparantly they are difficult to recondition. When I bought my one I tracked down the best price by a long way from Karcraft at Silverwater at $296 for genuine Marelli for Defender, the 100 amp for the Disco was about $10 dearer and for some reason won't fit on the Defender?
Karcraft details in suppliers NSW this forum, you will be suprised at their prices & do mail order at the time over $200 cheaper than best dealer price I got. They are a supplier to the motor trade (wholesale) but you are able to purchase from them.
Cheers
Bryce
