Battery Concerns

Check the earth. I had problems with my disco a few years back.
It would start fine in warmer weather. As soon as winter hit, it would struggle.

A new earth strap from the battery to the engine and it felt like I had put a new battery in it.

Check the voltage at the solenoid terminal on the starter ( the one that comes from the ignition switch that is energised when you turn the key to the start position). I had problems with poor starting on my series 3 and more recently on a JCB loader. The loader had the starter motor replaced, the battery replaced to no avail. I checked the voltage on the wire that comes from the start position on the ignition , on the solenoid and found only 7.6 volts, even though there was full voltage at the battery. I fitted another solenoid that was energised by the key start and took a fused wire direct from the battery to the solenoid and then to the starter. The difference was unbelievable on both engines. Ask me why, I can't say but it works and can only think that the extra volts pull the solenoid contacts in harder to get a better transfer of power to the starter.

Thank you all for your replies.

Suspicion got the better of me so I called a different Battery World store yesterday, and the worker mentioned that the information previously given to me was incorrect, and that they can test the battery in a matter of minutes while it is still in the vehicle. I had the battery tested at it measured 12.88 V and 645cca (is a 620 cca battery), which was a good result. Thumbs up to Battery world in Campbelltown - the service was terrific. The worker even checked the wiring in my battery box.

I will turn my attention to the starter motor and the connections again. I have a spare stater motor off a wreck, so perhaps i'll keep that in the car just in case!

Did they check the battery you have is actually the right one for your vehicle and has enough grunt?
I ask because when I replaced the original one in my Defender with a new Varta, Battery World said there were actually two which could be fitted, but I needed the larger one. Not sure about your case.

The battery is the correct size for the vehicle. In fact, it is the larger of the two that they recommend.

IMO the battery is fine and 620CCA is sufficient for the V8. Although the more CCAs the better. I've go an Optima Blue top in my 95RRC with 800CCA

. They are a bit expensive

but worth it.

I had the same issue in the 93RRC I used to have and it was the starter. The brushes where pretty worn and one had lost contact with the armature. As they work in pairs the starter was only cranking the motor at 50% of it capability.

A new set of brushes and she cranked up just fine.
