Clunk in rear diff

I have a clunk in the rear diff, happens when you go from forward to reverse and rev to forward, also around corners. The fender has only done 29,000Kms. Any ideas anyone?

At the 20,000Kms service they were nice, did a good job but lacked knowledge. All they could do was text book stuff

firstly...check and make sure the tailshafts are tight....these bolts do work themselves loose....

if all is good.....then .....check that the splines arent worn on your axles....
take the wheel off then remove the rubber hubcap and you should be able
to see the axles and their splines.....they wear out if they are not greased....
mine were replaced at 60,000kms for the same reason......clunk in rear....

good luck...

I had exactly the same thing in my Disco. Was quoted thousands to investigate the transfer box and drive chain as they said it was one of the transfer case shafts. An old bush landrover expert took one look and said your rear ball joint ( on top of the rear diff and holds the body onto the chassis) is stuffed. One hours labour and 150 bucks for the ball joint. Problem solved. Apparently it is a common problem with older rangies and discos. Don't know about defenders etc. So crawl underneath and check the rubber boot around the ball joint. if it is torn or missing I'll bet the ball joint is stuffed.

I have found the problem :!:

All it is is the splines on the short axle are worn. That is the splines where it goes into the diff. Now we will see how long LR take to find it

Thanks to Defenderzook, I took your advice but while I was there I pulled the axles out to have a look 8O

Gees... this is a worry. Mine has the problem already, and has had it as long as I can remember. Maybe my clunk is something different

As other people have said, this type of noise could be comming from almost anywhere.

Jack corner up and start wiggling things around abit. Might help narrow the problem area down a little bit

Mines going for its 50K service in early December. The splines that require greasing are at the wheel end of the axle? correct?
The disc is a bit light on in this area. Do you remove the drive plates whilst leaving the axles in place to get the grease in?

Trev.

All id did was to take off the wheel, take off the plastic / rubber cap over the axle, then take off the Circlip and after that the plate that holds the lot together. Then I just put some grease in. Hope that helps
