    TD5 Replacement Effort

    Hi All,
Since my D2 TD5 overheated I have been looking at options from repair to replacement to upgrading the chariot.

My question is: Assuming I can source a complete dressed TD5, how much of a job is pulling mine out and dropping another in? Is it even possible to swap the TD5 out as a dressed unit?

Of course, whilst out, I'll replace all those ancillaries, like water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat etc. I'll also prob plonk in a new/refurbed TC at the same time.

I've searched the fora and got heaps of useful info, but as most have done the heart transplant for love, I've not found a definitive time guide if it's done in one stint.

FWIW, to those who know what I do, for comparison, drive in drive out times for a heart transplant are: GWagon 15-20hrs, Unimog 6-8hrs, Mack 7-9hrs (assuming all hands on deck, eat at station and no toilet breaks ).

    Cheers
    Ralph

it wont come out fully dressed but you will get damn close to it.

Fan and AC have to come off, a couple of other bits you might take off depending on how good your tooling is but only because of access to other bits that you need to undo.

you should be able to nail it in 8 hours for the pull.replace and call it 2 more for changing over the dressing and setting everything up to go back in.

Be careful of your TC if the box tips forwards they can pop loose. Dont forget to reposition the flex plate and TC so that a mounting bolt lines up with the access hole in the bottom of the flywheel housing.

TD5, you need to remove the starter motor to get to the flex plate/tc bolts.
there are 3. use the bottom inspection hole to turn the ring-gear with a big flatblade screw driver to get to each bolt via starter motor hole.

when i refitted my auto, i was able to spin the TC with my finger through the inspection hole with a slight gap between the TC & flex plate, this is how i knew the TC was properly seated.

If you are talking a Defender it will come out with the fan in place and gearbox, tc attached. I have don it, however I removed the radiator and inter-cooler as well, but the air con condenser stayed in place. Using an engine crane, Only real thing that was taken off was the air con compressor.

Make sure it's the same type engine (10P or 15+P) and you'll need a tester to save the injector codes to the ECU

I thought you could use the later engines with a little help from a Nanocom. Isn't that the case?

Not really cos the MSB ECUs originally used on 10Ps will not accept green top injector codes nor Eu3 fuel maps and missing the AAT input link... they can be bodged but it will not be a clean job and perfectly runinng engine

Replacement ECU must learn the security code from the BCU... what i'm trying to say for the OP is that for a complete engine swap tester is needed one way or another just to be prepared
