    Well, yes and no.

    Actually more no than yes.

    Went out this arvo, put in the new lift pump, took an hour, needed to move air filter box and two fuel lines. Still a bugger of a thing to get to.

    Took till now to get out and have a test drive.

    Same problem.

    So, either I've got a bad lift pump, or I've done something wrong putting it in, or the problem is something else.

    Could be I didn't have the lift pump arm in the right place for the cam?

    Bugger.

    Bit of sand and grit and a bit of that oil/dirt paste.

    I'd be thinking not diesel bug. I drained about 30 litres and that wasn't muddy or discoloured. Replaced fuel filter. Wouldn't think a new fuel filter could be clogged that quickly.

    As you said the other day, it is like the engine is starving for fuel. It burns for a short time and everything seems fine, then it dies, either can't get anything from the accelerator, or stalls.

    When there is fuel going to the engine it doesn't have a problem, athough my 200m test drive was a bit sluggish.

    Unless its different to mine (98 Defender) then there is no filter in the sedimenter, just pull it off and give it a good clean out. Will probably be full of dirt/rust/and maybe some water. Before you do it though it pays to buy a new drain plug (the white nylon one) as they get fragile after a while.

    When I check my sedimeter I always remove the whole unit & not drain through the white drain plug. 1/2" spanner to remove bolt & it just drops down, a little spillage but nothing to worry about.

    This way (allthough messier) allows you to wipe the inside of the bowl out, as guaranteed to be silt in bottom & growth needing a good wipe.

    I do the same but still replace the drain plug, just insurance if you need to drain in the field. They're pretty cheap.

    I'm putting on my dark glasses, my false moustache, and my broad brimmed hat and getting the 130 towed to the mechanic.

    Mechanic looked and said 'I've looked, reckon it's the injector pump, cost you a bomb what do you want to do?'

    So, I said I'd have a chat to you fellas and see what you all had to say.

    Haven't looked at the diaphragm in the boost compensator hope that it might be that.

    So, injector pump. Apparenlty $1200-$1500 to repair, $2300 new or $4400 from Land Rover. Then the timing belt is off so probably replace that, and various belts and tensioner bearings. Worst case is looking very pricey. But what do you do? Not replace the timing belt when you're already there?

    So, mechanic also says don't bother with a used one unless it's come out of a car that was wrecked yesterday and was in really good condition.


    Who's done it, how much and all the rest.

    Help.

    Didn't check the diaphragm until I'm closer to knowing if I can afford the awful bill.

    Fortunately mechanic is happy to keep it in the yard for a few days.


    Live-in father in law is now in hospital, so no going away anytime soon.
