Rough guess is that the diesel injector pump is the cause of the problem. There is a vacuum hose from the turbo boost to the pump to adjust for the boost pressure increase. Check this out, it may be the issue.

Hi all,
Need your good advice.
Driving home today and 96 300tdi 130" Defender started acting very strangely.
Fluctuating acceleration.
Best way to describe it is like having a jar full of fuel, press the accelerator, empty the jar of fuel runs fine. Then no response on accelerator until jar of fuel fills up again.
Of course not exeactly that, but that's what it felt like.
Sometimes I'd put my foot down and full power, sometimes a little power, sometimes none. Didn't last for consistent amount of time.
Like the acceration was fading then coming back.
Turbo works fine. Diesel was from a jerry can this morning and I didn't have any problems with the tankful when I filled up the jerry.
Fair bit of black smoke at one point, but not consistent and only a couple of times.
Suggestions please?
Thanks
Simon

did you run the tank dry....?
have you checked the fuel sedimenter to see if there is any water or anything in the fuel.....?
Thanks guys.
Didn't run it dry, thanks Zook.
I'll check sedimenter and vacuum hose after I walk down to the mechanic.
I dumped it there yesterday arvo.
Vacuum hose has the right kind of feel to it. The way the problem comes and goes, and comes and goes, leads me to think there are a couple of things making it happen. Like loss of vacuum, then lack of fuel, so worse lack of vacuum, etc.
I'm hoping that it isn't fuel pump.
Keep coming with suggestions.
Cheers
Simon
I don't suppose the intercooler hose is collapsing under load then normalising when you lift the throttle?

all these problems were yesterday....
today it will work fine.....
just fill it with diesel instead of unleaded.....
all your problems started after you refuelled from the jerry can....
..........
...........Another possible to check.....the Diaphragm in the top of the Boost Compensator (top of injector pump)..........
.............a long shot, but worth a mention,
cheers,
Wayne.
hey simon....any news from the mechanic....?
Don't you just love the pdf manuals. Searching for a word is much easier than relying on the index having the same ideas that you do.
Cheers
