the fancy rubber moulding is starting to come away from the panels on the range rover...

can anyone recommend an effective adhesive tape that i can use to put it back on after cleaning it up?

3m has a double sided foam adhesive tape thats used on the bushmaster windows.

if it can hold 2 square foot chunk of inchish plus thick armoured glass in place when the bolts are removed I reckon it'll keep your trim in place.

3m have a product called VHB tape. Might be the same as Dave suggested?
3m are great with their data sheets so might pay to look around at what is compatible.

If you want to use an adhesive, Sikaflex is the way to go. Bus and train assemblers use it.

I've used it to secure both door and bonnet seals.

Yep Sikaflex is good if you never want to get it apart. You may want to choose something a little less permanent. recently I rang this bloke for advice on adhesive tape. He was knowledgeable and helpful, solved my problem.

There are a few different grades of VHB (Very High Bond) tapes, in clear, grey, white and in multiple thicknesses. Any of the 3M products are good, some rated better for outdoor use, the grey ones seem to be the go for outdoor use and are costruction grade. Its what I use for signs. There are other good VHB's too. Whichever you use, surface preparation is critical - any grease, oil, dust, dirt on the contact faces will see a fail. Clean both surfaces with a non-greasy cleaner (ispropyl in the green bottle from the chemist is good, not metho it leaves a film, brake cleaner is OK but takes off paint). For a belt and braces approach, use tape with a couple of blobs of Sika 11fc or similar. The advantage of tape is also that it maintans a minimum gap, so when its removal time its possible to get a blade behind the offending item and cut it free.

Agreed. I've used the grey RP45 type, and it's tough stuff.

I guess it's really application specific, so can't offer any more advice other than try it and see.

For door / panel protection I used a solid rubber section made by Molnar or some similar name in Melb.

Its everyday use is on the floor of a garage to roll a car against so you can get the nose very close to a wall without hitting it.

Taped the car up, sanded the paint off a bit, sanded the back of the rubber section, used 10mm double sided tape with sikaflex either side.

Worked fine. In 10 years it has only a couple of supermarket scars, very small and high on the body, not in the sides of the doors.

    Sikaflex polyurethane.

There is a specific automotive variety available.

It is what body shops use to put the rubbers back on and is also used to hold & seal your windscreen. Mouldings can be removed after it's been applied but you need to work at it!

Polyurethane is far superior to silicone as it offers greater bond strength, greater flexibility and is normally less prone to UV degredation.
