It looks like you might be right Damien. I have now (re)read numerous threads about converting to the early wide spindles and hubs, but they all are quite inconclusive about exactly which spindle and hub to use, and whether the standard ventilated disk will bolt up, and if the disk then ends up in the same spot in the brake caliper without the need for a spacer. Some threads about the rear axle even result in a 20mm track change!
So people please help me confirm the part numbers that are needed:
- FRC4320 Spindle (200tdi) - this seems to come with the FRC4319 stub axle inner bronze bush, where the 300tdi has a needle roller.
- PART # ??? - Stub axle thrust washer (or oil slinger). The 300tdi uses FTC56 ? this goes on the outside of the spindle where it bolts inside the axle. The earlier spindles seem to have a much bigger diameter here so possibly not needed.
- PART # ??? - Wheel bearing washer with a slot
- PART # ??? - Wheel bearing locking tab with a slot
- FRC6139 Front Hub - appears to come with wheel studs installed
- FRC5806 Early thick drive flange
- PART # (or dimensions) ??? - Drive flange bolts, the 300tdi ones will probably be too short.
- PART # ??? - CV outer circlip and shims? I'm guessing this is a larger diameter than the 300tdi
- Anything else that's needed???
Obviously then Ashcroft or HiTough 24/23 spline axles and AEU2522 CV's.
I assume the following are the same as my 300tdi?
- Vented disk - will it bolt on in the same spot in the caliper?
- FRC2310 spindle locking plate mud shield?
- SX110251M - spindle to housing bolts?
- wheel bearings?
- RTC3511 Hub seals?
- The 52mm wheel gearing nuts same size and thread?
Looking at the list above, reminds me why the bush and spacer idea was so appealing?
I have the Ashcroft HD Cv's and Hi Tough axles in the front of my 130 for over 40,000kms. I can not see a more simpler option than this. I looked at the County Cv's, but the thought of having so many small parts in there to adapt to the Defender hubs, led me to think that that option would turn out to be unreliable in the long run.
Here's my recollections from messing around putting 300tdi era CV's etc in the county (sort of reverse of what you are trying to do).
To convert county front end to 300tdi cv's I just replaced everything outboard of the swivel housing with 300tdi (including the rotor) and it all bolted onto the early county housing and swivel, with the county solid caliper.
You've probably already come across the fact that the early hubs had a wider bearing spacing. I think that's likely related to the difference in disc mounting face position and therefore disc offset.
I'd pretty much bet the 300tdi vented brake disk isn't the same offset and won't work with the earlier hub. Haven't tried it though.
County solid front disc from early hub definitely isn't the same offset as 300tdi hub solid rotor. Not sure whether vented ones are likewise affected.
Wheel bearing nuts are the same, as are wheel bearings themselves, RTC3511 hub seals, bolts that hold the stub on, and lock plate/mudshield.
Pretty sure the outer circlips and shims are same as its the same spline for thick/thin early/late flanges.
tab style lock washer for early stub P/N 217353
Think the drive flange bolts are P/N 279146 but needs confirmation.
Have you considered picking up a Perentie front axle as a parts donor for the early hub bits (even if you didn't want to risk unknown history CV's)?
Steve
If you really do want to do it cheaply you can drill 4 holes in a series drive flange to make it fit a 110 (PCD is the same and one hole stays the same).
FWIW I have a '87 county that came standard with AEU2522s, plus I have bolted on later (ventilated) discs and calipers.
Ok to keep pushing this uphill with a pointy stick !
Googling a number of UK LR sites about the compatibility of vented disks, and there were a number of replies like:
- All Defender front brakes are interchangeable from around 1990-1991 onwards, at the brake rationalisation, the vented calipers/discs will bolt on without issues
- removed the solid discs & fitted vented, went straight on, no problems at all
Sounds good.
And I googled for answers to the questions from Post #12 above
2. doesn't seem to have an external spindle thrust washer (see photo below)
3. 217352 wheel bearing key slotted washer
4. 217353 wheel bearing locking slotted washer
7. RYG101010L drive flange bolt M10 x 50mm (300tdi are 45mm long)
9.a. Not sure on the inner CV circlip retaining halfshaft possibly RTC4820
9.b. Will a FTC254 half shaft to cv spacer be required??? as per pic below?
Happy to be corrected
Also really keen to hear from anyone that can confirm they have physically bolted a ventilated brake rotor onto an early hub, and that everything lined up with the corresponding ventilated brake caliper.
Thanks,
Alan
That's good news - for you AND ME! (planning to put vented on my 120)
Just checked the DBA online catalogue to confirm, and it agrees, so I was definitely off the mark earlier when I said they were unlikely to be the same.
According to the catalog, front disc dimensions from 1984 thru to 2009 are the same except for the thickness difference between solid/vented. Diameter 298mm, height (inboard face of disc to mounting face) is 70mm for both.
Hopefully I can find the caliper spacers I've got stored somewhere in the shed :)
