    Price of Aluminium Plate

My Freelander is clearance challenged under the engine and I want to replace the plastic undertray with aluminium plate.

The local aluminium supplier quoted $230 for 1 square meter of 6mm flat plate - not chequered plate.

Seems a bit excessive but then I really don't know.

Am I being too unrealistic in expecting it to be cheaper?

wouldn't be far off esp if cut to size
we sell 5mm for $165m2 (we don't do much 6mm)
and charge cutting fees I would est approx $50 for 2 cuts (time based)
    (i'm in melb)

why 6mm? you don't need 6mm unless you are rock climbing the freelander and plan to really wack it hard
3 or 4 mm would probably do (and should be % way less as we buy it by the kg)
most impotrant thing is in the mountings / support for the plate

The plate needs to cover 1m x 1m without any support except around the edges - hence I considered that anything less than about 5mm would simply push up into the sump, gearbox etc with a decent bang from below. The front of the plastic undertray, which is a heavily reinforced aluminium structure took a few decent dents on my last trip offroad - it is a combination of only 185mm under the sump (a lift kit or bigger springs will give an extra 45-50mm) and independent front suspension and my poor driving as I was used to the disco's beam axle and better clearance.

So I guess I should just cough up and buy the stuff.

    Thanks

Try scrap and metal recyclers. They sell by the kilo - Makes things a lot cheaper.

I made 4 3mm checker plate wing tops out of a big sheet that cost about $30.

All depends what they have at the time

    Dave.
