My brother has a Series 3 2.25 diesel, it was a good car before he killed it (ok, the head was stuffed when he got it).
AFAIK it's a good engine, and the vehicle behing them are great 8)
Afternoon all,
I have found a 1980, Series 3, Diesel 88" (I think), and was wondering what people knew about these motors.
Are they the 2.25L Diesel, and are they any good? It seems to start OK, but I am not familiar with old diesels.
Is there anything else to look out for on this car, apart from the usual things (rust, funny noises, etc...)
Cheers,
Chumpion

The Diesel fitted to the Australian Series vehicles was the 2.25 litre from the Series 2a on. It shared the same block as the petrol motor, but differed in the pistons, conrods, head, and fuel arrangments, the shared the same g'box, diffs, etc. to the petrols, it only developed 60 BHP instead of the petrol's 77BHP so they only had a top speed of about 80-85 klms(50-55Mph) lots of low down torque, most of the vehicles sold new in Australia had the 3 Bearing Crankshaft but a few private imports had the later 5 bearing crank,(80?onwards) be careful of amotor that is blowing alot of smoke Black smoke without load -- fuel or injector problems ? Blue smoke -- worn rings, If in doubt get somebody with diesel knowledge to look it over, all other landrover quirks are the same, firewall rust, Chassis rust, (on shortys the chassis near the upper rear shocker mount), rear chassis Xmember,
Cheers and good hunting
