Sprung bases for fridges?

Do people think a spring base for say an Engel or a Waeco is necessary if travelling over rough (say corrugated) tracks? Or can the fridges take it?
I am going to buy an Engel

(btw...there are good deals at the moment ($1197 for 40litre anniversary fridge with transit bag and transit base)

and will get a spring base too if the consensus leans that way-I will be doing plenty of rough touring and 4wding.

Thanks

that is the standard price for the last year or so.....
it should also come with the transit lock base.....for that price.....

as for the spring base......i would like to know as well.....
most fridges are fixed firmly to the floor of the car and rely on the
cars suspension to the cushioning without any problems.....

RRP for the engel has been $1199 for the fridge alone(anniversary model), where I have looked at least, bags are about $160 and bases about $80-so the $1197 for the lot is as good a deal as I have been able to find-including on line sellers.
cheers

i was just trying to say thats what i paid and got a year ago......
same deal same price.....it seems to be a standard package and price...

engel will not budge on their price....
so haggling wont get you anywhere...some contract they have with engel...
all you may get is more freebies thrown in by the dealer....

but by all means try.....and let us know the results.....and dont forget the hinge
locks if it doesnt come with them .......(save yourself some frustration)

I heard some horror stories about spring bases being worse as they continued to shake the fridge after the initial shock 8O

For my first fridge(39lt engle) I used some 25mm high density foam, but after a short period of time it compressed and allowed the fridge to move too much :x

So I just tied it to the floor with turnbuckles and have used the same sort of system since with fridge slides and without always keeping it tight to the floor or slide and never had any dramas.

I would say that at least 90% of installations are firmly fixed to a solid floor or fridge slide with no problems.

My current fridge another 39lt (8yo) is still going strong and has been around the country 1 1/2 times with the old man most of that not even tied down in his Paj and then Patrol  including the Gibb River road and through the Kimberlys etc.

Thanks

Thanks fellas
Looks like spring bases with Engels might be a waste of space. I'll give it a miss.

if you are going to do a heap of corrugations you will no doubt be spending a heap
of dollars on your suspension.....why spend more for your fridge....?
the cars suspension is designed to absorb the shock and stop from reaching the cars contents....

have you carried eggs in your car before....
if the suspension is good enough for that a fridge should be fine....

a slide would be a better option to make it easier to access.....
so spend the dollars you save on a slide or more beer....

I have had my 39 litre Engel for around 9 years, no spring base and it is going just fine. I took it to Yardie Creek (Exmouth), via the biggest corrugations I have ever seen, both towing mirros came off the car in the first 200 metres! Still no problems with the fridge.
Personally I would not bother.

Springs without dampers will only exacerbate a problem.

It also depends where you place the fridge: aft of the rear axle will as well.

Between the rear and front axles is the best place to be after all that's where we sit. The rear-most passengers in a 7 seater get the worst of it.
