    TDi ALTERNATOR

Hi Guys, when I was at the LR workshop getting my fuel problems fixed , he said my alternator was on it way out and he said that charging ,but he said my taco meter was jumping all the time , I tought it was it was just the diesel motor running, he said then when it go's ,I will be up 4 a new alt that will cost $900 , but he said he will do it for $600 , and said that there are no reco for then!!!! ? is he right , ? price is that right ,and if so is there another alternator you can put in it's place ... ? is there a loose wire on the Taco meter... cheers4now alex from mornington

    Hi Alex,

Yes LandyAndy has got it right, I had the same problem with my 95 TDi, the marelli alternator has a wire for the tacho which works loose. Looking from the back of the alternator it around the 2 o'clock region. Not too technical I know but only way I can explain it. My brushes were also warn and needed replacing.

See what the volts and amps output from you alternator is before considering a replacement on that advice. The tacho flicking is an easy fix if its the wire.

mine has been doing this on and off - keep cleaning it and it gets better.

last week I put the pliers over the connector and just tightend it up a little - so far so good.

oh and like the above said, put a multimetre across the alternator and see if its putting out a steady charge of over 13volts.

    Alex,

A thread on dreaded dead alternator here:

But definitely check that tacho connection first. I have had to crimp the connector to keep it in contact.

I did the same as LRH, mine started jumping a week after i bought it. I tought it was an electrical problem so didnt think much of it. After about 9 months it stopped. I checked the back after some advice from One Iota and sure enough the wire was the problem, it was so loose it had come off, i squeezed the connector with some pliers and havent had a problem since. I'm amazed and very suprized they can't be recoed?
I'm sure a good auto elec could do it

anyway worse case I can supply brand new alternator for Tdi for $480

a HS2.8 alternator is $550 BUT includes a built in (rear) vacuum pump so you can **** that oil leaking thing worth a fortune off the side of your block
I have one (HS2.8 alt) coming in with my next engines to confirm it will bolt straight on without any mods to mount (It looks the same but I didn't want to pull one off a brand new engine to try it)
