    D1 steel rim offset change

I plan to run either 265/75's or 235/85's (undecided yet) on my new toy 200tdi D1. It has 265/70's on std rims atm and has less steering lock than my other D1 or RRC on 245/75's with std offset rims.

I have some 0 offset 16x8 sunnys, which fit well (it has cut guards and flares), but i prefer the look (and strength) of the factory steel rims. Thinking they mite also be a bit on the wide side for a 235/85 too.

So, what offset can i expect to achieve with a cut and shut std rim, with and without flipping them?

Any tips on doing this? I have access to a large enough lathe to machine the welds apart.

    Cheers
    Rick

From memory you can get about 15 mm over standard before flipping. That is unless you machine the lip on the centre down like some shops do. Which takes you to about 30 mm before flipping.

I have 2 modified sets. One flipped one not flipped. Can take pics and measurements if it will help.

Unflipped with the flange machined off a bit takes you to pretty much zero offset (ie 30mm from standard as said above).

The tyre manufacturer will have a max rim width recommendation. IMO 8" for 235's is too wide. Might even be borderline for the 265's. I jam 315's on an 8" rim.

Some pics and measurement would be good, thanks.

Not so worried about getting max offset, but it would be nice to get the steering lock back close to what a std D1 should be.

Don't happen to know if there are any hidden plug welds holding the centers in? All of the std D1 rims i have here have tyres fitted to them atm.

Is there any real benefit in flipping the rims and going for a greater than 0(ish) offset? I would consider the max tyre i would ever see myself running would be 285/75 or 255/85.

You will want at least an offset of neg 25 to run 285's, i run 265's on 16x8 neg 25's and they fit perfectly.
