Pre-turbo is more accurate representation of temperature.
Post turbo is an unknown due to heat soak on the turbo
I've just ordered and received a new decat pipe for my defender td5.
As I will be putting an egt gauge in soon(in prep for an ecu remap)should I drill/tap/weld the sensor in now, down stream of the turbo ?
Or do I put the sensor in tne manifold where the EGR used to be ?
What are the pros and cons of each spot ?
Ie. Whats more useful and safer

The pics below show my preferred location for a Td5 pre-turbo EGT sensor.
To get the tip of a probe from the EGR plate to somewhere near the manifold outlet/turbo inlet for a representative measurement requires a long unsupported probe, subject to a lot of turbulence and vibration - not good for the probe's electrical longevity.
Drilling and tapping near the turbo flange means only 15 - 20 mm of probe needs to be inside the manifold wall.
PM me if you would like some hints on drilling and tapping the manifold.

I'm thinking that I will probably deweb my manifold when I fit the decat pipe so I guess that would be the best time for drilling and tappping the manifold to reduce the risk of swarf entering the turbo. Any preferences on brands of egt sensors ?

I ended up with one of these... no idea if this is a brand of choice, but seems to be well made.
Still need to install so can't comment on performance.
