    Alternator ouotput

    Hi all

Does anyone know the alternator output of a standard 1999 Disco II (TD5) alternator?

I have a bushmans knowledge of such things. I have a dual battery system in my bus and want to also put a battery on my campertailer and have that charged by my alternator as well.

Can my alternator handle charging 3 batteries + accessories such as light, spotties etc?

My daul battery system is setup such that as soon as my ignition is switched on all batteries are connected. Not the best way to do things, but thats just what came with the car

    Thanks

Have a look at the plate on the side of the alternator. Will proberly be 55 amps.
You must realise that having 3 batteries hooked up without an isolating switch or device, is a no no. The alternator will deliver only to the battery with the least amount of internal resistance.
So if you have one buggered battery it will get all the charge and your good batteries nil.
Also if all your batteries are connected together ie no isolating switch then they will go down to the level of the least charged cell. In other words ,one bad battery will drag the other good one down to its level of discharge.
With an isolating switch to seperate the batteries your alternator should be able to handle 3 batteries.
    Mine does.

yes, not my preferred option, but the isolator switch that was in the car when I bought it only works that way. I should look at getting one that requires that the main battery is fully charged and isolated before it opens up to other batteries.

    8) johnv, i have a 95 v8 disco the alternator is 100 ampyours should be the same, should be stated on the alternator, either stamped in or on the sticker.
it will handle charging all you have, but if you let every thing work at once you could get in trouble,
call drivesafe, he has the jiggers you need to fit to keep your batteries charged and not kill the starting battery.

Getting to see the alternator is not a easy thing to do. Anyway from what I have been able to find out its 120amps for the TD5 and 130 amps for the V8 in the Disco 2's

Hi johnv, first off, what size batteries have you got and what size cable do you have connecting all the batteries together.

    We’ll start from there.

    Cheers.

    Good question.

I know the cabeling is sufficient. Sparky friend told me so.

The dual battery system is the one made by ARB. The secondary battery is an Odeyssy ( how ever you spell that ) 400 CCA If I remeber correctly. Both the main and the one on the trailer are the "standard" battery that disco come out with if that makes sense.

Tomorrow morning I'll take a look at the specs and let you know
