Gasket recommendations for V8 heads, intake, exhaust

    Hi all,

I am after recommendations for gaskets. Motor is a 4.6 P38a high compression. I would have thought for heads Cometic Multi Layer Steel (with some Hylomar spray given that block and heads are not like new but not sure yet ...the Aus web site says that the Vitron finish is good for a variety of surfaces...). Not sure whether .040 of an inch or .070.

    HEAD GASKET

An ARP head stud kit will sort out the clamping.

    Any advice appreciated.

I cannot see online that Cometic do intake and exhaust gaskets. What recommendations are there for both?

Any recommendations as to where to source all gaskets and ARP head stud kit?

    Cheers and thanks

OEM inlet and exhaust gaskets from Mario (Roverlord) will do just fine. The late exhaust gaskets are MLS anyway. I'd also be checking with Cometic about the bore size, D2 is 94mm not 97mm as listed. Could be ID of fire ring, who knows.

Your piston deck height will dictate the head gasket thickness. If you have zero deck height then the .040" gasket is the one I would choose. The .070" will result in a large quench and poor detonation resistance.if however your piston is out of the hole .030"-.035" then the .070" thick gasket will bring you back to a desirable quench of .035" -.040".
    Hope that helps.

    G`day ,

if the 4.6 is factory spec it has something like +.020'" deck height as in the piston doesn`t reach the top of the block which makes the .020" a plus figure in calculation .

    G`day , your link says .040" and .060" .

A std elring gasket is .060" at the fire ring the round metal part of the gasket that sits on the liner before it is squashed by fitting .

If your going to use these gaskets , i can`t see why you would need to spend another $120 for the .060 because as others have suggested the .040 gaskets will work good and in practice there will be little difference using either .

The only thing i would question is the 97mm bore that they list .

If you look at the link you posted and look under Rover instead of Range Rover you will see they have a listing for a 96mm bore gaskets , which i think may be better suited but when you are able to measure yours , you will know for sure .

With these engines i think it is very important that the fire ring sits on the liner .

Thanks mate. The 4.6 I thought was 94mm same as the 4.0....only stroke difference. They have a 94mm bore gasket... mine is a stock motor so original bore.
