    Fan belt for S2

I am having a devil of a job trying to get the correct size fan belly for my S2 2.25 engine. I have just fitted a new alternator RTC5084, however the standard size 1050 fan belt is way too slack and there isn't sufficient room to tension it before the alternator hits the chassis. I have tried other size belts but can't find one that fits. The chassis is a S1 109 and the engine is a S2 7:1 CR. Any ideas?

At an auto parts shop like Bursons or Repco you should be able to get belts that are sized in about 15mm increments. You would be unlucky not to find one to do the job. Can you identify the size of the one you are replacing? My 2.25 (with an alternator) has a Dayco A1055 on it. Cheers, Mick.

Grab a bit of rope not too big a diameter and run it over the pulleys. Measure the length of the rope needed to make up the "belt length", that should be a close enough measurement to get a belt the correct length. You will need an "A" section belt, thats the size of the "V" in the belt, and what ever the length of the rope needed in "mm". So an example would be an "A 1020 belt". Thats an A section belt that is 1020 mm long. Alternators and generators usually have different pulley sizes. Alternators generally have a smaller pulley as they need to turn faster than a generator to create power so the belt you will need may be smaller than the original belt. You could try also getting a belt of a s3 as they had alternators fitted as standard from the factory.
    Hope this helps.

    Cheers Rod

    G'day All,

Yes it is a devil of a job!!!!
    This is what I do:

-Get an old V belt that fits the grooves in the pulleys that is longer than required.
-Set the alternator adjusting bracket to about 1/4 to 1/3 inwards from the all in position.
-Cut out pieces of the old belt until its a tight fit.
-Superglue the belt together and now see where the adjustment ends up. -Fine tune the position by cutting and gluing a few mm. at a time.
Now this is the critical part of the process.

Measure the outer circumference of the made up belt very carefully.
However, this is not the size of the belt you need.

The numbering system for these belts is the "Effective Length" of the belt and not the outside circumference.
(This measurement is shorter than the outside circumference by about 1/2" for small belts.) Yes 1/2" in circumference makes a difference in the adjustment range.

Go to a website such as Dayco or Gates USA and look up the outside circumference measurement that you measured and the effective length of that belt is the number that you buy.

Also some belt shops may have a measuring device that can give you the size to buy from your made up belt. However, I haven't seen one of these for many years.

    Good Luck!!!

    Chris

    Thanks

    Thanks chaps

I have measured the distance again and bought 2 different sizes of Dayco belts, one of which will fit, I hope.

As I have replaced the dynamo with an alternator, there is little room to adjust the tension of the fan belt because the alternator hits the engine mount. Maybe this is because I have a S2 2.25 engine in a S1 chassis? Anyway, hopefully it will fit and I can finish fitting the radiator, fill it with water and start her up for the first time
