    Smokey Td5

Can anyone here help me. I am at my witts end with this car.

It smokes a bit at idle(black smoke) but when the air con is on, it smokes a lot.

At cruising speed it is fine, except it is drinking fuel like there is no tomorrow.

I have now just replaced the injectors ($2500 wasted) and a new loom. Checked the plug at the ECU and it was clean as a whistle.
It has a new air filter.

Could the ECU itself be faulty without logging a fault?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

It seems that its overfuelling at idle and the load of the aircon clutch makes it worst, can't you record a live data log with nanocom and post it here?, i'm sure that the EGTs are high too, some causes can be:
    1. low AAP(airbox) sensor reading,
    2. low coolant temp reading
    3. low MAP/IAT reading
    4. low MAF reading
it can happen that one of these readings to be low but not so low to trigger a fault code.... is it taking much for the temp gauge to go to the middle? deffinitely a live data session is needed

off course that it can be some timing, compression or valve clearance issue too but that's above my knowledge

Had one here that WAS the ecu. Corrupted during flashing i would hazard a guess. Smoked like hell and even ran to a blue tinge there was so much diesel being injected. Also helps to check the reading from the intake airtemp and ambient air temp. I have seen a faulty aat sensor tell the ecu the outside temp was -23C!!!.

Thanks guys. Being an interstate truckie, I have to leave soon, so I will respond to this when I get back.

When I got my td5 it idled okay but any acceleration would see plumes of black smoke and no power. Was okay once it got up to speed but not great. Turned out to be a stuck EGR valve. Got a $50 blanking kit and ran like a dream.

    cheers

EGR long gone. This drives fine, a tad rough at idle and maybe a very slight hesitation on take off,
apart from that if you did not see the exhaust you would not even know there was a problem, until a check on fuel economy was done.

Excuse me fi this is too silly.. but might your air filter be blocked... or some stuff where the MAF mesh is.

No this is not a silly question, as sometimes the simple things often get overlooked.

However, if you re-read my OP you will see that I said that it has a new air filter.

Dave, debris can block the intake just upstream of the air filter.
Leaves etc. can sit on the intake side of the static fan blade that is on the intake side of the airbox.
I have seen this before, totally stuffs up the A/F ratio and will give the black smoke symptoms you describe.
    Worth a look...

    Cheers,
    Paul.
