The one in the foreground has a clutch slave cylinder mounted on it, meaning it is Series 2/2a. The 2/2a boxes are essentially the same as Series 1, except that the bell housing is different, also different for the six. Clutch mechanism is the same on Series 1/2/2a except the Series 1 has mechanical linkage where the later ones have a slave cylinder operating the same cross shaft via a bell crank.
Series 3 has the slave cylinder on the other side, and it operates the release fork directly.
